Job Description
Job Title: Part-time Academic Coach

Department: Disability Support Services/Speckman Tutoring & Learning Center (TLC)

Salary Range: $13.00 - $18.50 per hour

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Immediate Supervisor: Director of Disability Support Services and Director of Speckman Tutoring & Learning Center

Schedule Details: Part-time (not to exceed 19.5 hours per week)

Position Summary

The Part-time Academic Coach works with students to support them both in their course work and their development as learners. In addition to subject area proficiency, this position requires the capacity to facilitate learning in dynamic settings; the ability to comprehend and execute verbal and written directions; the competencies of sound judgment and initiative when working in the absence of direct supervision; the discretion to maintain confidentiality.

Essential Job Duties

  • Be friendly and courteous to all students and staff.
  • Facilitate student learning; the coach never simply provides answers. The mission of OTC’s academic support program is to “empower students to achieve success.” This philosophy must begin with the coach.
  • Consult with Accessibility Coordinators on ways to best communicate and/or reinforce concepts for students with specific learning disabilities and/or other disability-related challenges.
  • Encourage and build student esteem, showing respect to all students regardless of the level of knowledge or course level.
  • Provide comprehensive academic coaching for students in math, writing, sciences, computer information, study strategies or other subjects, based on qualifications.
  • Seek assistance from other coaches, supervisors, textbook resources, and other instructors in the subject area when uncertain of the correct response to a student’s need or question.
  • Respond readily to various supervisors. (This role serves students in Disability Support Services and the TLC. The latter is open 60 hours/week; supervision of the TLC rotates between staff members.)
  • Demonstrate alignment with OTC Cares (student-centered, holistic, proactive, and data informed) and utilize that framework in day-to-day activities.
  • Work toward College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA) certification by attending meetings and completing assignments to further skills. CRLA Certification Level I must be obtained within the first full semester of employment, and subsequent levels of certification must be obtained each year afterwards.
  • Exhibit exemplary attendance and punctuality. This includes arriving on time, completing paperwork, and informing supervisors of any schedule conflicts (giving a minimum of two-day notice when possible).
  • Maintain a good academic standing and a GPA of 3.00 in the subject area(s) tutored (if current student).
  • Comply with college policies and procedures. Conduct self professionally, as outlined in the employee handbook.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including attending college functions.
  • Assist students in developing the concepts necessary to complete students’ academic goals in the subject(s) for which the coach has qualified based on grades and faculty recommendations.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Competency in technology and software, including learning management systems.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • “A” or “B” in First Year Composition (for English) or College Algebra (for Math) from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.

Preferred Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Experience working within an academic and/or collegiate setting.
  • Ability to work a flexible, varied schedule based on student needs.
  • An Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning or equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience teaching or tutoring others.
