Job Description
Position Purpose/ Job Summary


Academic coach have roles in the First Year Success Institute and the Academic Success Center (ASC). Academic coaches working full time are responsible for FYSI cohort groups. In their FYSI responsibilities they serve as a resource and assist students with information related to the FYSI program, University Policy and processes. They also aid students in making cross campus connections that aid in success. In their academic success role, they are responsible for supporting and advising students on academic probation and engaging them in activities that will help return the student good academic standing.


Essential Functions And Responsibilities


  • LU First Year Success Institute Essential Functions and Responsibilities o Responsible for 2 cohort groups in the LU First Year Success Institute (FYSI) o Work with cohort faculty group leader and peer mentors assigned to FYSI cohort to determine how to best assist the assigned cohort groups o Attend FYSI training and events o Collaborate with the Director of Mentoring and Tutoring to host 2 study nights a week o Serve as the early alert contact for all student in the cohort o Provide academic intervention plans for cohort members that receive early alerts o Work with faculty leaders to monitor class attendance and report or intervene as necessary
  • Assist students in setting academic goals
  • Act as a liaison for academic support and student support services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Complete all required training and professional development session sponsored by the university
  • Working hours may include evenings, holidays or weekends depending on deadline requirements and special events
  • Work with students to improve classroom engagement and learning strategies.
  • Attend 2 FYSI cohort specific activities each semester o Attend one large scale FYSI event each semester o Collaborate with other campus services, to locate students with 3 consecutive class absences.
  • Maintain records of student academic progress
  • Attend 3 LU sponsored events with your cohort groups, that are NOT commencement or convocation.
  • Effectively communicate with each student respectfully, frequently and efficiently the different policies and procedures of the university Conduct workshops that relate to academic success
  • Build rapport with university students
  • Support the advising and registration process for students on academic probation.
  • Create and implement academic intervention for assigned students based on academic weakness and strengths
  • Identify gaps in services based on best practices in retention and create programs to improve student success


Education And Experience


Required Qualification: Bachelors Degree, 2-3 years of experience in higher education. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Forms and Google software, Ability to learn new software programs, self-starter mentality with the ability to work in teams


Preferred Qualifications: Masters Degree in student affairs or higher education administration. One or more years of experience in academic support services.


Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities


Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.


Ability to maintain confidentiality. Interpersonal/ human relations skills.
