Job Description

Department: Adoption/Intake
Location: Oklahoma City, OK
Immediate Supervisor: Adoption Center Manager
Status: Non-Exempt / Overtime-Eligible

Purpose of Position:

To assist with adoptions for dogs and cats in the OK Humane Adoption Program. To provide humane and proper care to the organization’s animals being housed on site and to additionally provide excellent customer service to anyone visiting the program location.

Duties & Responsibilities:

In accordance with organizational policies, duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain equipment in working condition, report equipment or supply needs to supervisor.
  • Works closely with Foster/Volunteer Coordinator to schedule animals drop offs and pickups.
  • Operate cash register and follow set cash handling standard operating procedures.
  • Assist foster parents with animal drop offs and pickups.
  • Monitor animals and immediately report health or behavior abnormalities to supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Assist with transporting or arranging transport of pets between various OK Humane locations as needed.
  • Assist in administering animal vaccinations, tests, medications and treatments as directed.
  • Clean and sanitize stainless steel cat cages.
  • Daily feeding and fresh water.
  • Assist with intake procedures for OK Humane pets.
  • Follow established disease control protocols to daily clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter apartments, kennels, cages, and general areas.
  • Maintain work and general areas in an organized manner.
  • Perform daily cleaning and sanitizing of work and public areas.
  • Clean and sanitize cat and dog living areas.
  • Operate laundry and dishwashing equipment.
  • Take out the trash.
  • Restock cleaning areas with supplies and equipment.
  • Works closely with members of the OK Humane to determine volunteer needs on a regular basis or for one-time projects/events.
  • Assist with general questions and requests from the public.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work within a team environment while on the go.
  • Ability to follow directions and multi-task.
  • Must be knowledgeable and comfortable with computer systems use in operation and have basic computer skills, including database skills.
  • Must be able to work maturely and respectfully with diverse groups of people.
  • Commitment to mission, values, goals and success of OK Humane.
  • Position will require weekend days and evenings.
  • Confidence handling or learning to handle both dogs and cats.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, a profession, tactful, mature and sincere attitude, and be able to represent the mission, goals, and the policies of OK Humane in a creative, credible, and energetic manner.
  • Must be organized, flexible, and adjust to rapid changing needs.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to animal welfare issues strongly preferred.
  • Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be proficient on MS Office.
  • Must be comfortable handling/learning to handle both dogs and cats – general handling. (petting, leash-walking, some lifting and carrying), and restraint (drawing blood, giving vaccines, and placing animals in cages/carriers).
  • Excellent customer service

Physical Requirements:

Work may be performed in a kennel/shelter setting and/or outdoors.

  • Must possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers. Exposure to disinfectant solutions when cleaning.
  • Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help.
  • Must have a good range of motion in joints, especially wrist, knees, and elbows.
  • Must be able to work in potentially extreme environmental temperatures.
  • Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours.
  • Must have a good range of motion in your back, for instance, twisting.
  • Subject to animal bites and scratches while handling animals of questionable temperament.
  • Must be able to use a ladder and or step stool.
  • Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination.
