Job Description
Description Located on 7 acres in the heart of Cary, Downtown Cary Park offers an artistic landscape surrounding beautifully distinguished structures and spaces available for reserving to host a variety of gatherings. The Park Steward performs routine, semi-skilled, and unskilled work in the care and maintenance of the Downtown Cary Park and Downtown Parking Deck. Work is performed under regular supervision by the Park Steward Coordinator.Work will require additional weekend shifts and/or flexible schedules. Typical Tasks
  • Performs routine maintenance, minor repairs, and cleaning;
  • Performs maintenance work independently either in assigned zones or park-wide;
  • The ability to walk and stand for long periods, as well as the ability to reach, stoop, kneel, etc., is also required.
  • Provides routine custodial service when/where necessary;
  • Assists with facility cleanup during hazardous weather and or special events programming;
  • Performs hourly/daily safety inspections and accomplishes minor repair tasks at all park play areas and prioritizes repairs to playground safety surfacing;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities General knowledge of tools and equipment associated with building and grounds maintenance duties; general knowledge of rules and regulations governing parks use by thegeneral public; ability to interact positively with the general public; ability to understand written and oral instructions; ability to work independently or within a team setting; some technological skills for general data gathering. Minimum and Preferred Qualifications Any combination of experience and education equivalent to graduation from high school/GED. Some experience in performing special event support and park and/or landscape maintenance tasks is preferred. Physical Requirements
  • Works as a member of the Facilities and Grounds Team and assists other Park staff when and where necessary;
  • Provides setup and/or takedown assistance for special events or programs;
  • Visual acuity is necessary in order to perform custodial and maintenance functions and observe needed repairs. Conditions of Employment Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment. * position pending Council approval
  • Engages with the public to provide excellent customer service and greet park users with a professional and welcoming attitude;
  • Reports or responds to issues observed in facilities and reports facility repair needs to Park Steward Coordinator or Maintenance Coordinator;
  • Performs some landscape maintenance tasks such as raking and blowing leaves, occasional pruning, trimming, etc.;
  • Inspects park for vandalism and graffiti and reports repair needs to Park Steward Coordinator or Maintenance Coordinator;
  • The physical ability to lift moderate to heavy items for extended periods is required.
  • Work in this class is medium to heavy and requires exposure to the elements such as heat, cold, and rain;
  • Removes trash, litter, recycling and compostable materials and debris from park walkways, sky walks and general grounds, disposing of all materials in the appropriate manner;
