Job Description
Description / Position Overview
  • There are three openings for this position

Park Ranger I - Urban Trails Ranger Team
As a Park Ranger, you will ensure the City's natural and historical resources are maintained, preserved, and protected according to pertinent laws, ordinances, and regulations; provide enforcement pertaining to the City of Colorado Springs Parks Code Chapter 9; Article 9.
The Park Ranger is responsible for upholding safety and environmental regulations set by numerous park plans and monitoring the activities of assigned parks and recreation facilities. This position requires effective communication skills related to conflict resolution and de-escalating situations in a professional manner. Situations can engage a variety of people with diverse backgrounds which will include mental health and homeless community members. Subsequently, having former law enforcement, park ranger, or military experience is beneficial.
Essential Job Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Coordinate with public safety personnel
  • Act as liaison between the public and inter-governmental agencies; maintain close communications with Colorado Springs Police Department, Colorado Springs Fire Department, Colorado Springs Utilities, Division of Parks and Wildlife, and the Humane Society
  • Issue citations for violations
  • Complete reports and appear in court when required.
  • Respond to sick or injured animals and facilitate the removal of dead animals.
  • Assist in the creation of daily and weekly work plans.
  • Assess needs related to park health and resource protection.
  • Communicate with staff and public to address any concerns.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback after the event.
  • Patrol urban trails and parks throughout the day
    • Address public safety and health issues
    • Monitor trails and parks for hazards.
  • Verify proper permits are obtained
  • Provide direction for access and closures needed regarding emergencies.
  • Prepare facilities for special events
    • Support the event coordinators
    • Ensure facilities are safe, clean, and prepared for events
    • Verify proper permits are obtained
    • Evaluate and provide feedback after the event.
  • Monitor properties for resource damage.
  • Address public safety and health issues
  • Support the event coordinators
  • Monitor trails and parks for hazards.
  • Respond to emergencies on park and trail property.
    • Coordinate with public safety personnel
    • Provide direction for access and closures needed regarding emergencies.
  • Maintains statistics regarding park issues.
  • Monitor and replace park signage.
  • Ensure facilities are safe, clean, and prepared for events

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:

Knowledge of:
  • Visitor impact management assessment tools
  • Operation and basic maintenance needs of equipment utilized in park patrol.
  • Operations, services, and activities of park facilities and programs
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook)
  • Natural area/open space/public lands conservation and management.
  • Transport and tie-down requirements.
  • Natural resource management practices and techniques.
  • Traffic control training and techniques
  • CPR, First Aid, First Responder, and EMT fundamentals
  • Strong skills with computers, iPads, and other technology.
  • Skills in public relations and communications.
  • Natural ecosystems and human influences.

Ability to:
  • Become certified in Wilderness First Aid or similar certification.
  • Use current technology such as smart telephones and associated technology.
  • Become knowledgeable of regional, county, and state fire, health, safety, and animal welfare codes pertinent to parks and trails.
  • Handle stressful & emergency situations.
  • Operate specialized communication systems.
  • Become knowledgeable of applicable municipal code.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Safely use assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles
  • Coordinate care for sick and/or injured animals.
  • Become knowledgeable and work effectively with law enforcement and emergency services protocols and procedures.

Successful candidates will have

  • Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges.
  • One year of full-time experience as a park ranger, law enforcement officer, or similar experience.
  • Possess, or obtain within three months of hire, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and First Aid certifications
  • Posses a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent
One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

Ideal candidates will also have

  • Completion of Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator training
  • Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources, Outdoor Recreation, Criminal Justice, or related field
  • Experience with working with unhoused individuals or groups
  • Possess Wilderness First Aid certification

Additional Information

The Background check for this position includes a polygraph examination and fingerprinting.
Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 frequently and 100 pounds occasionally with assistance. The ability to sit, stand, run, or walk for prolonged periods is also required.
