This series specification describes three classes which, under supervision, perform a variety of duties in the construction, repair and maintenance of parks, including buildings, facilities and landscaping; and perform other specifically related work as required.

Park Maintenance Worker
Senior Park Maintenance Worker
Park Maintenance Specialist

This series is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker series in that positions in classes are assigned to parks and recreation facilities maintenance.

Park Maintenance Worker - This class is the unskilled-semiskilled level. Incumbents perform manual and unskilled/semi-skilled assignments under supervision.

EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and responses to the supplemental questions, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to, written examination and/or interview. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.

SELECTION PROCESS:
As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process. Appointment is subject to successful completion of a pre-employment medical examination (based upon job-related physical standards) by a City-designated physician.

Failure in any one part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

All Levels: Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of parks and recreation facilities; Plant, water, cultivate, fertilize and care for shrubbery, lawns and trees; mow and edge lawns with hand and light powered equipment; spray for pests and weed control; rake grounds; prepare soil for planting and transplanting; perform a wide variety of semi-skilled and unskilled duties; load and unload supplies, lifting and moving heavy objects; perform other manual labor necessary to the completion of jobs; assist trades workers by performing unskilled tasks; maintain yards and buildings; clean and maintain tools used on the job; perform a wide variety of semi-skilled work in the maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment; assist in regular lubrication of equipment to keep equipment in good working condition; clean and maintain grounds; operate light equipment, such as trucks, compressors, forklift and backhoe; learn to perform routine carpentry, painting, masonry and electrical work on park buildings, including roof and floor repairs; may participate in major park construction work; and perform related work as required.

Irrigation Systems - installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems; identify problems of controllers, heads, lines, valves and wiring; prepare cost estimates; spray herbicides for weed control; operate trencher and other equipment.

Construction - build fences, bleachers, benches, backstops, cabinets; perform routine carpentry, painting, masonry and electrical work on park buildings, including roof and floor repairs; operate heavy equipment - such as tractor, scrapers, tillers, ulgers, backhoes and forklifts; direct the work of assigned helpers and perform related work as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is Park Maintenance Worker: Six months to one year of experience in parks maintenance.

POTENTIAL CAREER LADDER: Experience gained by incumbents in this class can provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to qualify for Senior Park Maintenance Worker and Park Maintenance Specialist.

LICENSE REQUIRED: Possession of a valid and appropriate California Driver's License.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Proper methods, materials, tools and equipment used in maintenance work; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.

ABILITY TO: Read and write at the level required for successful job performance; use properly maintain assigned tools and equipment; assist with semi-skilled maintenance, repair and construction work; operate a vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Vision: Visual acuity which corrected sufficiently to perform the essential functions of the position; average depth perception needed. Hearing: Hearing ability to effectively hear and comprehend oral instructions and communication and equipment noise.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings, weekends, and be called back occasionally. Constant work around machinery. Occasionally work indoors and constantly outdoors. Occasional exposure to unprotected heights, extreme temperatures, excessive noises, solvents, grease or oil, slippery or uneven walking surfaces, dust fumes, smoke, gases, odors. Constantly works with others and occasionally alone. Rare exposure to flames/smoke, and rarely work with explosives.
