Description

The Dane County Land & Water Resources Department in Madison, WI has a current full time (1.0 FTE) opening for a Park aborer. The Eligibility List created will be used to fill future vacancies over the next six (6) months.

Definition

Under general supervision, perform unskilled and semi-skilled work necessary to the operation and maintenance of park grounds, natural areas and forestry, including manual labor, operation of motorized equipment, public contact, equipment maintenance and related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Operate equipment such as skid-steers, large power mowers, tractors with attached mowers, dump trucks, other trucks and trailers, spraying machines and other equipment of comparable size and complexity. Operate soil tillers, chain saws, wood splitters, stump grinders, power trimmers, skill saws, drills, air hammers, posthole diggers, small rollers, and related power equipment. Conducts light facility maintenance such as painting, staining, and sign refurbishing. Minor woodworking, including construction of new wood park signs, information boards and brochure holders. Apply pesticides under state and federal rules and regulations. Performs grounds maintenance duties including mowing, seeding and fertilizing; tree and shrub planting, pruning, removal and stump removal; prescribed burns, prairie seed collection and invasive species control.

Assist skilled workers in capital improvement, major maintenance and repair projects. Occasionally collect refuse, perform minor maintenance and repair work on buildings and clean park facilities. Plow snow and apply ice control materials.

Performs minor equipment and tool repair; ensures that equipment is serviced with gas, oil, water and lubricants and that all preventive maintenance is completed. May occasionally perform park ranger duties including revenue collection, public contact and inspect snowmobile trail signage. May occasionally lead volunteer workdays. Responsible for adherence to safety rules and regulations; maintains records on work completed.

Education, Experience & Special Requirements

Must be able to read and write and have one-year experience in grounds maintenance, farm work, equipment operation or general labor. Preference will be given for work in a park and recreation or natural area management setting.

Special Requirements:

Must possess or secure a valid Wisconsin class “A” commercial driver's license at time of application. Everyone who has a commercial driver’s license (“CDL”) must be registered in the US Department of Transportation’s Drug & Alcohol

Clearinghouse. Registration is available at https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/register. Applicants must pass drug/alcohol testing after a conditional offer of employment has been made.

Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

This position is frequently active for the entire shift (standing, walking, stooping, twisting, lifting, bending, pushing, reaching, climbing, crouching and crawling). Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted and up to 75 pounds with assistance. Required to operate heavy equipment. Ability to use hands/feet for repetitive single grasping, fine manipulation, pushing and pulling and operating equipment controls. Work will be outdoors in varying terrains in harsh temperature conditions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of grounds maintenance, natural area management and parks operation and maintenance. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to operate various heavy machinery and power equipment. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions. Ability to work well with others.

Bilingual Pay: Employees who work in bilingual designated positions receive an additional $.75 per hour.

Undesirable Hours Premium Pay: Employees may receive undesirable hours pay of $1.00 for anytime worked between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m and for anytime on Saturday and/or Sunday. (not applicable with all employee groups).

Paid Parental Leave: Dane County also provides 6 weeks of paid parental leave for birth or adoption of a child.

Caregiver Leave: Dane County offers 80 hours of paid leave to care for an ill family member.

Telecommuting: Telecommuting allows employees to work remotely for all or part of their workweek. Dane County considers telecommuting to be a viable, flexible option when both the employee and the job are suited to such an arrangement. Dane County will permit telecommuting when it benefits the productivity of the employee and their department and if determined by employee's department that telecommuting is not detrimental to either the County or the employee.

Student Loan Forgiveness: If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you may be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

WI Retirement System: Employees hired after 7-1-11 must be expected to work a minimum of 1200 hours annually to be enrolled in the Wisconsin Retirement System when hired.
