The Metropolitan Council's Environmental Services (MCES) Division has up to two (2) full-time vacancies for a Painter. These are long-term temporary positions (up to two (2) years).

It also provides coordinated long-range water supply planning, air and water quality monitoring to meet future needs. How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

This position will work in an industrial-type environment preparing and painting surfaces using the appropriate practices, methods, techniques, procedures, and equipment. This position will be required to work at any Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) facility as assigned.

What you would do in this job

  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Prepare and paint surfaces using appropriate methods (sandblast, waterblast, sand, spray, scrape, etc.). Apply protective coatings by means of (brush, roller, airless sprayer, etc.).
  • Prepare and finish drywall surfaces (tape, sand, paint, etc.) using appropriate methods and equipment.
  • Stencil and stripe roadways and parking lots.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Completion of a state painter apprenticeship program AND two (2) or more years of journey-level painting experience with industrial surface preparations and coating practices, methods, techniques, and procedures


OR

Five (5) or more years of journey-level painting experience with industrial surface preparations and coating practices, methods, techniques, and procedures

License Requirements - Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

What additional skills and experience would be helpful in this job (desired qualifications ):
  • Certified Society for Protective Coatings (SPC) Coating Application Specialist (CAS)
  • Experience promoting an equitable, positive, and respectful work environment that values culture and diversity among all employees
What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of industrial surface preparation and coating practices, methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision as well as in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of drywall preparation and finishing (taping, sanding, painting, etc.).
  • Knowledge of industrial stenciling and stripping roadways and parking lots.
  • Ability to analyze a project, determine the work needed, and perform the duties required.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills

FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Safety Sensitive: Yes - subject to random drug testing

Working Conditions: Work is performed in an industrial-type environment at MCES wastewater collection and treatment facilities where fumes and airborne particles are present in addition to noisy conditions, and working around moving parts and equipment. Shift work is not required. This position requires travel between work sites.

Physical Requirements: Must have physical ability to perform work in awkward and cramped conditions that will include stooping, kneeling, climbing, balancing, standing, and walking. In addition, will perform repetitive motions for extended periods of time such as reaching, bending, twisting, lifting, pushing, and pulling.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
