Position Overview

The Department of Agriculture seeks to hire a Painter. This position is an integral part of the team that provides the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Illinois State Fairgrounds. We encourage qualified applicants to apply.

Job Responsibilities

  • Erects ladders or scaffolding needed for painting and repairing interior and exterior walls.
  • Inspects work sites to determine amount and type of materials needed for painting projects. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
  • Performs shop work at facilities.
  • Prepare interior or exterior walls, metal surfaces, floors, ceiling and equipment for painting, applies and fills holes in plaster or woodwork with patching plaster, putty or other type filler compound.
  • Performs work in Illinois State Fairgrounds computer & sign lab.
  • Performs journey level work inpainting, redecorating and refinishing of walls, interior and exterior, woodwork, furniture and fixture for renovation and maintenance at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program and two years of full-time journey level painter experience or six years of full-time journey level painter experience.


Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to work from heights (on ladders, scaffold, and platforms), stand for long periods, work on knees, overhead, and lift and move heavy equipment, materials, structures and furniture up to 50 pounds independently, and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
  • Requires a valid, appropriate driver’s license.
  • Requires the ability to pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Requires ability to operate power lifts and overhead platforms.
  • Requires the ability to pass a name-based background check.
