Job Description

Job Duties

In charge of all Paddock activities and stall assignments. Gets the field on the track for post parades in accordance with the schedule given to him by the Presiding Judge. Observe the horses in the Paddock prior to a race, record equipment used on the horses for racing, and ensure that a responsible trainer or groom is in the Paddock for every horse to prepare it to race. Inspect horses for changes in equipment, broken or faulty equipment, head numbers or saddle pads. Supervise Paddock gate men. Properly check in and check out horses and drivers in the Paddock. Direct the activities of the Paddock blacksmith. Immediately notify the Presiding Judge of any event or problem that could in any way change, delay, or otherwise affect the racing program. Report any cruelty to any horse that you may observe to the Presiding Judge and the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission, along with the improper use of track facilities by the horsemen. Ensure that only properly authorized persons are permitted in the Paddock, a violation of which may result in a fine, suspension, or expulsion. Assign stalls for all stabled horses, race and go horses, stake horses, and detention barn stalls. Monitor and report to racing office the daily log of arrivals and departures, and report unauthorized arrivals to the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission, and horses without health certificates. Supervise preparation, clean up, and maintenance needs of all barns and stalls. Supervise winter training program, including collection of stall rent and distribution of rebates. Supervise alternative bedding programs. Allocate blacksmith shops, check blacksmiths for insurance requirements, licenses, and qualifications. Allocate out Paddocks including collection of fees. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing company’s complaints and resolving problems. Performs other related duties as assigned. Promotes superior guest service.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:



Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have thorough knowledge of racing procedures and racing equipment. Familiarity with horses. Effective speaking skills in group settings a must. Employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
