Job Description

ORTHODONTIC ASSISTANT

Barden Orthodontics, S.C. is a well established and growing practice. Our mission is to work together as a team to provide compassionate and exemplary orthodontic care to every patient we see. Our office is state of the art and modern.

This position is for a four day work week (Monday through Thursday), in a great location.

If you are an enthusiastic orthodontic/dental assistant who enjoys working with children, adults and a great team, we are the office for you! Experience with orthodontic assisting is preferred, however we are willing to coach and train the right Dental Assistant to expand their skill set into the fantastic world of orthodontics. Must be self-motivated, willing to take direction, and go the extra mile. Great interpersonal skills and the ability to function as a reliable team member are required.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

Patient Management Duties

  • Ensure proper treatment notes are recorded in patient’s chart
  • Ensure patients are always attended
  • Go through oral hygiene instructions with patients
  • Set up treatment rooms for procedures
  • Prepare the patient for bonding (cleaning teeth, placing cheek retractors, etching, applying primer)
  • Mix dental materials
  • Give patient instruction and demonstrate when necessary
  • Fit bands on posterior teeth
  • Monitor patient flow
  • Escort patients from the treatment room
  • Take orthodontic records (radiographs, pictures and impressions)
  • Escort patients to treatment chairs
  • Anticipate and assist doctor’s needs
  • Make impressions
  • Review the patient’s oral hygiene status with them at each appointment
  • Show care and concern, and help patients feel comfortable
  • Notify Administrative Assistant if a patient should be called in the evening after a difficult appointment
  • Greet patients and their parents when they arrive and monitor arrival time
  • Seat patients in treatment rooms
  • Ensure patients’ questions are answered thoroughly before they leave
  • Place separators
  • Turn on/off mechanical equipment
  • Perform clinical procedures as practice act allows and as directed by doctor

Treatment Room and Sterilization Duties

  • Follow laboratory procedures according to office protocol
  • Oversee cleanliness of the treatment room according to sterilization procedures
  • Implement the preventative maintenance/cleaning schedule for dental equipment
  • Sterilize all instruments and hand pieces according to OSHA regulations
  • Keep dental units ready, stocked and clean
  • Disinfect treatment rooms according to OSHA regulations
  • Maintain dental office emergency kits
  • Keep trays, instruments and treatment room drawers organized
  • Keep all counters, cabinets, sinks, windows, and floors clean
  • Ensure that lab slips are labeled correctly for orthodontic laboratory cases

Records/Inventory Duties

  • Securely store and handle patient records in compliance with state and federal requirements, including the HIPAA privacy and security regulations
  • Ensure that treatment rooms are stocked at all times
  • Finish study models
  • Monitor inventory and work with treatment coordinator/office manager/doctor to order dental office supplies as needed
  • Accurately file patient information

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Proficient computer and word processing skills.
  • Posses ability to work in a team environment.
  • Posses ability to work well with various and all patients/general public.
  • Attended dental assisting program preferred and/or dental assisting experience required.
  • Proficient in a fast-paced environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of dental terminology preferred, but not required.
