The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center is expanding and seeks an outstanding Optometrist to join our rapidly growing group. UNM is committed to building a healthy, well-educated, economically vigorous New Mexico. The Health Sciences Center, University of New Mexico Hospital, and School of Medicine have seasoned and new leadership. As part of the UNM Health System, the UNM Eye Clinic provides a rewarding mix of tertiary and indigent care. Our two recently renovated eye clinics, with innovative expanded space that dramatically improves patient access and services, are located near and within UNM Hospital. Our providers are able to travel between both clinics within 5 minutes to offer quality care and services in a wide range of ocular diseases and eye care with various specialists. The entire institution is well poised for the future with the addition of our new Critical Care Tower Hospital as well. Applicants must have a residency in ocular disease or equivalent experience is preferred. The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to clinical care as they work collaboratively with other well-respected colleagues in primary, specialty, and surgical care teams. Position Summary:
Provide primary eye care involving diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with a wide spectrum of ocular conditions and visual disorders utilizing the full range of available diagnostic testing. Prescribe glasses, contact lenses, topical medication, oral medication and/or other therapies as appropriate. Refer for subspecialty care as clinically relevant. Other duties may include low vision management, specialty contact lense management, and tele-retinal image grading using remote telemedicine program. Ensure adherence to Hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include infant through geriatric age groups.


Detailed responsibilities:
  • PATIENT CARE - Work as a team member with medical/nursing/counseling staff to provide comprehensive care and promote continuity of care
  • DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
  • PROCEDURES - Procedures include but are not limited to insertion and removal of punctual plugs, dilation and irrigation of punctal, removal of superficial corneal or conjunctival foreign bodies, corneal debridement, culture of ocular infections, bandage contact lenses, and removal of eyelashes.
  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
  • OTHER SERVICES - Contact lens fitting and dispensing including specialty lens designs as appropriate. Low vision management or referral as appropriate. Utilize a picture archiving communication system (PACS) to screen for retinopathy and other ocular conditions as appropriate.
  • EYE EXAMS - Perform problem focussed and comprehensive eye exams including visual acuity, refraction/retinoscopy, ocular motility, pupillary function and neurological aspects of the visual system. Examination of ocular health and appearace using slit lamp, tonometry, gonioscopy, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy and fundus lenses. Interpret diagnostic testing such as automated perimetry, ocular coherence tomography, anterior and posterior segment photography, B-Scan ultrasonography, corneal topography and pachymetry. Integrate both ocular and systemic apsect of eye care in diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with various ocular conditions. Order laboratory testing and imaging when indicated. Communicate and coordinate care with other health care providers as appropriate.
  • PATIENT EDUCATION - Provide education for patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues and the use of prescriptive medical treatment
  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • DOCUMENTATION - Provide accurate documentation of patient care, document orders, directives, procedures and patient responses in the medical record and communicate them to other members of the health care team; maintain accurate, legible and confidential records
  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • RELATED WORK - Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

  • 1 Year Optometry Residency Completed


Experience:
Essential:
Residency in ocular disease, hospital based optometry or equivalent experience
Nonessential:
Skills in low vision management, specialty contact lenses or pediatrics are beneficial


Credentials:
Essential:
  • CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
  • Optometry License in New Mexico


Physical Conditions:
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. May require walking or standing to a significant degree or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or may require working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of materials is negligible.
