Job Description

This position will design, implement and maintain dark fiber and Ciena DWDM optical network for UETN.

Responsibilities
⁃ Network design and implementation of Ciena DWDM network across the State of Utah
⁃ Perform advanced troubleshooting of Ciena 6500 and Waveserver devices
⁃ Provisioning of new wave and circuit services
⁃ Troubleshoot dark fiber issues using OTDR and optical test set equipment
⁃ Lab regression testing of Ciena DWDM code upgrades
⁃ Manage Ciena device licensing
⁃ Author code upgrade and device licensing procedures
⁃ Author Ciena network troubleshooting guide for use by engineering and operations team
⁃ Responsible for maintaining Ciena MCP software for network monitoring and provisioning
⁃ Use Ciena Site Manager software for troubleshooting and provisioning
⁃ Work with field team and network operations center on fiber testing and Ciena DWDM network troubleshooting
⁃ Work with network architecture team on planning locations to acquire dark fiber in strategic areas around the state
⁃ Develop detailed documentation archive to be used by operations, engineering and field teams
⁃ Create end-to-end test plan for newly provisioned services
⁃ Produce detailed fiber optic route maps
⁃ Maintain spare equipment pool in warehouse
⁃ Some travel within the state of Utah required
⁃ After hours maintenance and support
⁃ Candidate will be required to work at UETN offices, located in Salt Lake City, UT, three days per week. Work from home is also allowed.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and at least 5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences
⁃ 10 years experience working with DWDM optical networks.
⁃ 10 years experience working with dark fiber plant including testing and troubleshooting of fiber optic issues.
⁃ Expert level knowledge of DWDM networking including ROADM, RAMAN and EDFA amplification, fixed filters, transponders and management plane. Candidate must understand how these elements interoperate and must be able to perform advanced troubleshooting on each element.
⁃ Expert level experience using OTDR and optical test equipment.
⁃ Expert level experience reading OTDR traces with the ability to pinpoint issues and work with fiber providers to address issues.
⁃ Experience using performance monitoring (PM) in troubleshooting.
⁃ Understanding of optical protection switching (OPS).
⁃ Knowledge of how fiber type, splicing, patching and fiber bends impact DWDM networks.
⁃ Experience using optical spectral analyzer, power meter and inspection microscope.
