Job Description
Overview:

The SIS group is currently looking for a talented engineer (level based on experience and education) to join its seasoned R&D team. This is an optical engineering role and person in this role will need to have both wide-ranging technical skills as well as some in-depth knowledge of optical interferometry. Design work includes analysis of interferometers, optical modelling, tolerance analysis, optical ray-tracing, and specification of key optical components. The role will require lab experience so to participate in the build and test of prototype interferometers. Data analysis skills that facilitate manufacturing reliability predictions based on prototype performance is a plus.

Engineer interfaces directly with external customers and works on cross-functional team problem solving efforts. Works on projects with long term technical and financial importance to management. Develops and maintains relationships across departments to better execute projects. Works with some direction from supervisor and has ability to be an independent technical contributor.

Responsibilities:
  • Model and optimize 3D optical systems for optical interferometers
  • Interface with opto-mechanical and CAD designers to define tooling and optical mounting based on predicted worst-case optical tolerances
  • Interface with customers to determine their needs, to present options in a manner consistent with Keysight business principles, often offering out-of-the-box solutions beneficial to both parties
  • Generate lens requirements, coating requirements, and optical system requirements from customer interactions and documents.
  • Design feasibility experiments for opto-mechanical sub-systems, at times using simulation tools in support of R&D prototypes and production processes
  • Generate optical components specifications and drawings based on higher level specifications and models.
  • Provide accurate and detailed requirements documentation for procurement and fabrication of optical components.
Qualifications:
  • Complies with the Clean Room Protocol when in a clean room environment
  • Attention to detail. Demonstrate persistence in identifying the cause of unusual results – good problem solver
  • Direct experience in the specification and testing of optical based integrated systems.
  • Writing technical reports in both detailed written format and concise pictorial oral presentation format.
  • Ability to work independently toward project goals with general guidance
  • Complies with health and safety policies and procedures
  • Good understanding of integrated optical systems involving the integration of light sources, fiber optics, imaging optics, precision mechanics, image processing, and other key sub-systems and technologies
  • Supports company values including ethical conduct and high integrity in all actions
  • Working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment – familiar with wavefront measurements
  • Understanding of precision alignment & metrology techniques.
  • A Master’s degree in Optical Physics or an Optics related Engineering discipline and 4 years relevant experience OR a PhD in a directly related field with postdoc experience.
  • Experienced and knowledgeable in laser physics and gaussian beam propagation
  • Experience with one or more optical design software packages such as CODE V, Zemax and FRED

OTHER DESIRABLE SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Reliability analysis of optical components.
  • Designing, setting up, and conducting optical system lifetime tests.
  • Ability to layout mechanical arrangements for optical testing, possibly in CAD.
  • Understanding of degradation mechanisms and acceleration factors.
  • Analyzing test data and conducting statistical analysis
  • General knowledge of operations, including procurement, planning, manufacturing, test engineering, and quality systems.
  • Execution of assigned tasks in a time and cost-efficient manner.
