Job Description
Overview:

The Ophthalmic Technician assists the ophthalmologists and optometrists in preparing patients for their appointments by taking medical/ocular histories, performing standard entrance tests, visual acuity and refraction as well as slit lamp examination of the anterior segment on patients. You will also provide support to Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center and may also assist the ophthalmologists in various minor surgical procedures including laser treatments.


Hours are: (Monday-Friday) 8:30 am-5:00 pm

Responsibilities:
  • Assists the ophthalmologists in performing laser photocoagulation and minor procedures such as lid lesion removal. Instills anesthetic drops in patient’s eyes, hands instruments to the Ophthalmologist, and helps to rinse eyes after procedure is done. May help with adjusting the settings of the laser.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Performs standard entrance tests on patients, specifically: visual function tests including refraction; lensometry and keratometry. Performs ocular health assessment including examination of the pupils and extraocular muscles; slit-lamp examination of the anterior segment and applanation tonometry. Based on the exam findings, determines and recommends further diagnostic testing as warranted or per the direction of the ophthalmologist or optometrist.
  • Will be trained to become certified in all our clinical research studies.
  • Performs specialized ophthalmic tests as ordered by the ophthalmologist or Optometrist, including Hertel exophthalmometry, stereo vision testing, Humphrey visual fields, and color vision: Ishihara, and D-15. After successful department training, will provide support for the Advanced Diagnostic Imaging Center by performing OCTs (Optical Coherence Tomography), digital retinal imaging, digital anterior segment imaging, IOL master and ophthalmic ultrasound.
  • Prepares patients for ophthalmologic or optometric examination by obtaining ocular and medical history and accurately entering the information into the electronic medical record.
Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of the keyboard and computer to enter patients’ information into the electronic medical record
  • Ability to operate complex ophthalmic equipment (or willingness to be trained on how to operate the equipment)
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and to also collaborate with colleagues to address mutual concerns and participate in a solution
  • Ability to consistently perform detailed work to ensure accuracy in testing
  • Clinical Trial Certification in refraction and acuity testing within first year of hire followed by optical coherence tomography and ophthalmic photography required within three years
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • JCAHPO certification at level of Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) is preferred. COA certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs to assist non-ambulatory patients into examination chair and to transport patients via wheelchair
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to HIPAA policy and maintain patient confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain a professional and discreet demeanor at all times when responding to patients, visitors and co-workers
  • Ability to prioritize tasks to complete work in a timely manner
  • Ability to evaluate complex eye disease and needs
  • Ability to perform effectively under conditions of fluctuating workload and assignments based on changing needs of the BEI
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience as an Ophthalmic Technician
