Job Description
Under general supervision, assists the Ophthalmologist in caring for the eye patient by providing important and preliminary information on the patient's medical condition that is obtained through a variety of visual acuity and ocular motility tests and through ophthalmic photography. Maintains equipment to ensure valid and reliable results.

Education

Bachelors degree or2-3 years experience prior experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred. Or obtain within 12 months of employment


Experience

2-3 years prior experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant


Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform complex analysis of information.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both in terms of relating to patients and relating to coworkers and referring physicians
  • Ophthalmic technical skills, including refraction
  • Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases, ocular emergencies.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic instrumentation; knowledge and performance of techniques to measure the patient's visual acuity and ocular motility and to administer eye drops, ointments, etc.
  • Knowledge of oral medications and invasive techniques.
  • Skill in data analysis and interpretation.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to file and retrieve records.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission Policies and Regulations


Licensures, Certifications

  • Current CPR certification.
  • Certification as Ophthalmic Technician from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) highly desirable.


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to concentrate and achieve a high level of efficiency with minimum errors , ability to prioritize
  • Frequent standing and walking.


Working Conditions

  • Works in normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, temperature extremes and the like. Exposure to certain distasteful patient care activities and communicable diseases is moderate.


Conditions of Employment

  • Must obtain Certified.Ophthalmic.Technician (COT). within 12 months of hire.
