The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 2 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida.
The Ophthalmic Technician 2 assists the ophthalmologist by gathering basic data pertaining to the patient’s visual status and maintaining an environment conducive to the delivery of efficient, quality eye care. The Ophthalmic Technician 2 also performs appropriate clinical testing techniques to detect visual deficiencies.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for detailed documentation in the EMR system.
- Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses. Performs technical workups and special testing.
- Assist with training and onboarding clinical support staff.
- Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
- Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
- Serves as a Certified Ophthalmic Scribe or a Certified National Study Ophthalmic Technician.
- Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
- Monitors and maintains the appropriate levels of minor equipment, dry goods, and pharmaceuticals in clinic.
- Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
- Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment. Completes intravitreal injection (IVI) preparation for patients.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
- Examines eye for abnormalities.
- Prepares exam rooms for daily clinical activities.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Certification and Licensing:
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT/COA) or
Certified Ophthalmic Scribe (OSC)
Experience:
Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
- Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
- Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
- Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
- Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Commitment to the University’s core values.
- Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
Department Specific Functions:
- Exercises sound judgment and clinical experience to independently perform basic ophthalmology evaluations including ocular history taking, visual acuity assessment, manual or autorefraction, intraocular pressure assessment, slit lamp, ocular motility, pupillary function, and glare test/PAP/pachymetry.
- Ensures exam room is properly prepared for daily clinical activities including equipment, supplies, and pharmaceuticals.
- Transcribe the impression and plan, results of tests, prescriptions, and orders.
- Utilizes two patient identifiers at all times and proactively communicates with team members.
- Safely manages patient flow to ensure timely delivery of care.
- Document any procedure that may be performed by Ophthalmologists or Optometrists.
- Assists Ophthalmologists or Optometrists, as needed.
