Working under the supervision of the Operations Manager and Operator 1st Class, the Equipment Operator 3rd Class is responsible for assisting in the safe, legal, reliable, and cost-efficient operation and maintenance of campus utility production and distribution systems of steam, Electricity, condensate, and domestic water. This position is located at Howard University, Washington DC campus.


What you’ll do:

  • Designated as an emergency employee and must report to work regardless of the university’s operating status
  • Perform chemical analysis of boiler feedwater, make-up water and condensate return. Adjusts chemical treatment to specified ranges established by the chemical treatment company
  • Participates in repair, maintenance, installation, and upkeep of all Central Plant equipment and work areas
  • Records and monitors equipment operating conditions and reports or adjusts as required to maintain safe and efficient operation
  • Reviews operational manuals, technical manuals, and plant procedures
  • Participate in the safe and reliable operation of Combustion Turbine, Generator, Heat Recovery Steam Generator, and High pressure Boiler for the production of Steam, Electricity, and condensate for customer

What you bring:

  • Excellent team player who is intrigued by detecting problems and implementing the solution
  • Work with drawings and be capable of systematically and logically locating the problem when drawings are not available
  • Adhere to the highest safety standards while multi-tasking and utilizing problem-solving and interpersonal skills
  • Minimum 3rd Class DC Steam Engineers License required
  • High School Diploma or equivalent with a minimum of three (3) years of training or experience in the trade practice of steam engineering. Must operate intuitively from previous knowledge in troubleshooting gauges and instruments on equipment to bring about satisfactory operation.
  • Utilize hard work ethic, self-starter, and can-do attitude while analyzing plant processes, recommend, and implement improvements
  • Novice in translating and communicating operational problems to all levels of management

Additional Information/Conditions:

  • Capability to lift light to medium-weight objects utilizing necessary safety equipment as needed
  • Capacity to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy while using company-issued computer, calculator, and other devices
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to weather conditions.

  • Competence to perform work from ladders or scaffolds, on top of boilers, next to hot steam-driven equipment, and near rotating equipment. This may require a person to push or pull objects and/ or work inside confined spaces, manholes, crawl space or work in abnormal sitting or standing positions
  • Willingness to develop technical proficiency in some software applications (Maximo, SAP, ADP)
  • Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is not exposed to weather conditions and noise levels that would be considered usually a moderate to a high level
