Job Description
Hours: M-F 10:30am to 7:00pm
JOB SUMMARY:
Functions as a member of the healthcare team working with surgeons, anesthetists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities before, during, and after surgery. Patient outcomes are achieved by assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating, and documenting the delivery of patient care under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Training: High school diploma or equivalent with acceptable orientation and training to perform as a scrub technologist in the surgical suite and other clinical areas. Current BLS within three months of hire.
Experience: None required.
License/Registration: None required. Prefer certification as a Surgical Technician.
Population Served: Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Young Adult, Middle Age, and Elderly.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Planning and Prioritizing
Assists in formulating and implementing the medical and nursing plan of care.
Information Gathering
Gathers information from the Physician Preference Card for all necessary items to perform a given surgical case. Discusses with surgeons their future needs for surgical cases.
Decision-Making
Works with the RN circulator to decide the immediate needs for a given surgical case. Assesses the needs of the surgeon as to what is needed from the “Hold” items for a surgical case.
Communication
Uses positive communication skills to problem-solve on a one-to-one basis.
Technical Proficiency
Performs scrub duties accurately and efficiently according to department policy and procedures. Functions as a first assistant to the surgeon on cases when one is required in accordance with the role defined by law. Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization methods required for specific instruments and equipment. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills required for this position in accordance with the competency checklist.
Teamwork
Observes and interacts with patients and/or other members of the surgical team to identify physical and psychosocial needs of each patient. Communicates information in writing and verbally to members of the healthcare team to promote optimal patient care. Demonstrates team spirit in peer working relationships and inspires a spirit of cooperation and collaboration with other departments.
Quality
Demonstrates knowledge of surgical procedures and of equipment and supplies needed for procedures. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon in order to expedite the procedure, thus minimizing the patient’s exposure to surgical and anesthetic stress.
Outcomes
Observes quality sterile technique to ensure patient safety and eliminate the possibility of nosocomial infections.
Personal Education
Attends and participates in meetings and educational offerings.
Work Effectiveness
Assures a clean and safe environment by following principles of asepsis. Demonstrates basic knowledge of normal and pathologic anatomy and physiology and of the actions or pharmacological agents used for irrigation and infiltration in order to individualize patient care. Follows the safety and infection control policies of the Surgical Services department and the hospital. Identifies emergency situations and uses sound judgment in instituting established procedures to respond to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner.
Reliability
Completes staff assignments accurately and efficiently. Demonstrates responsibility for the proper care, labeling, and handling of all specimens. Participates in completing daily surgery routines and procedures. Utilizes supplies and equipment appropriately and in a cost-effective manner.
Education of Others
Acts as a preceptor for new surgical services staff.
Creating a Safe Work Environment
Identifies safety concerns and actively seeks to resolve these issues.

Assumes the willingness to be accountable for the well-being of the larger organization by operating in service, rather than in control, of those around us.
Ethical Conduct
Consistently communicates and collaborates with colleagues about decisions which involve legal and ethical issues.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Cleans and/or repairs equipment. Responds to other clinical areas’ emergent needs. Transports patients to/from other patient care areas. Utilizes all of the hospital’s communications systems. Performs other non-essential functions as requested.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Sitting: 25%. Standing/Walking: 75%.
Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment and patients weighing up to 300 pounds.
Occasional pushing/pulling of equipment and beds weighing over 100 pounds.
Occasional climbing of stairs to reach other levels of the building.
Frequent stooping to administer medications and perform patient care functions.
Occasional/kneeling/crouching/crawling to assist patients and perform patient care functions.
Frequent reaching/handling/fingering/feeling to obtain supplies, write reports, and perform patient care functions.
Constant talking/hearing/seeing for all aspects of patient care.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Location: Inside.
Occasional exposure to wet/humidity from water, steam, pharmaceutical preparations, and body fluids.
Occasional exposure to noise to cause distraction from hospital and patient alarm systems.
Occasional risk of injury due to proximity to CPM machine, bed motors, hydraulic bed scale and Hoyer lifts.
Occasional risk of injury due to exposure to chemotherapy agents, disinfectants and cleaning solutions.
Frequent biohazard exposure from soiled patient care items and body fluids.
Occasional exposure to fumes and odors from cautery, acetone and body fluids.
Pay Range:
$23.68-$36.46 Hourly
