Operating Engineer 1- has a minimum hire rate of $18.38/hourly
Operating Engineer 2- has a minimum hire rate of $19.67/hourly

Function of Work:
To operate, regulate, monitor, service, and maintain ventilation, refrigeration, heating, and related machinery and equipment, including pumps and other utility systems.
Level of Work:
Entry.
Supervision Received:
Close from a higher-level Operating Engineer or agency official.
Supervision Exercised:
None.
Location of Work:
May be used by all state agencies.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Operating Engineer 2 by responsibility for boilers or power plants of less than 150 horsepower.
Performs preventive maintenance (oils motors, changes belts and filters, paints and cleans) on boilers and related equipment such as ventilating and refrigeration equipment, air conditioning machinery, generators, suction fans, pumps, and compressors.
Maintains a logbook that details the operation of boilers and/or pumping equipment and lists any maintenance work performed.
Starts and stops pumps.
Fires gas or oil fired boilers.
Adjusts fuel and airflow.
Regulates water level.
Reads gauges to check water level, steam pressure, and operation of valves and auxiliary pumps.
Performs minor repairs on boilers and related equipment.
Assists skilled workers in performing major repairs.
Administers chemicals to closed systems, cooling towers, and boilers.
Tests water for chemical content.
Assists in the overall maintenance of pump stations.
