Job Description
General Summary


Oversees the activities of investigators at the Office of Bar Counsel (OBC), serving as the direct immediate supervisor of investigative staff. Supervisory duties include coordinating the orientation and professional development of investigators; acting as the liaison between investigators and Bar Counsel’s leadership team; assisting with human resource functions such as investigator hiring, timekeeping and performance-related issues; and serving as a point person with respect to obtaining and maintaining OBC access to research-related resources. Reports to Bar Counsel on matters related to these and related issues concerning the oversight of investigative staff. In addition to supervisory duties, participates in investigation of complaints against attorneys registered in the Commonwealth by providing thorough, accurate, and timely research, data, analysis, and witness interviews to Assistant Bar Counsel.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*


  • Acts as the direct supervisor of investigative staff, serving as a source of guidance for investigators with their investigations; coordinating their annual performance reviews with direction from OBC leadership; and managing investigator attendance, timekeeping, and other administrative functions.
  • Serves as the liaison between investigators and Bar Counsel’s leadership team.
  • Maintains and keeps up to date OBC library holdings and subscriptions necessary to obtain records from, courts, agencies, online research providers and other sources.
  • Participates in hiring investigators and in managing their performance, training and development.
  • Schedules and conducts investigator meetings on issues of common interest.
  • Performs investigations including preparing file summaries, assisting Assistant Bar Counsel, and researching legal issues.

Preparation, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities


  • Minimum five years’ paralegal or investigator experience or equivalent, preferred.
  • Strong research and investigation skills.
  • Proficiency in legal research resources.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software and online search applications.
  • Strong managerial and communication skills.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Proven skills in problem identification, analysis, and evaluation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY


  • Supervises team of investigators.


WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS


  • Normal office working conditions include frequent sitting, walking and computer monitor use. Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
