Job Description

$1,500 sign on bonus available for full time roles, $750 sign on bonus for part time.


GENERAL SUMMARY:


Under the direction of phlebotomy management, performs specimen collection for facilities serviced by Beaumont Laboratory including nursing homes, physician offices, draw sites, hospital settings and private homes using appropriate technique with the least discomfort to the patient.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:


1. Performs venipuncture and capillary punctures to obtain adequate samples from geriatric, chronically ill, potentially combative, and/or mobility-restricted patients. Responsible for proper patient identification, correct specimen labeling and necessary documentation. Demonstrates knowledge and ability to evaluate and select proper specimen collection methods for age specific patients.

2. Supports laboratory activities related to laboratory testing (phlebotomy, specimen collection, computer order entry and specimen processing) to ensure accurate result reporting and quick turn-around time.

3. Promptly and courteously picks-up specimens from Beaumont Laboratory Nursing Home clients. Identifies specimen(s) at pick-up and verifies drop-off on the PDA handheld. Delivers specimens to designated Beaumont Hospital Laboratory locations.

4. Provides stat draw service with a TAT expectation of 90% delivered to any Beaumont Laboratory for processing within four hours. Will be required to be on call with an expectation of prompt response and service.

5. Participates in vehicle maintenance programs as assigned. May be required to utilize personal transportation with reimbursement for travel provided at current IRS mileage rate.

6. May perform registration duties applicable to the site/location of assignment. Computer based registration and order entry duties require prior training provided by the applicable department.

7. Maintains storeroom, equipment, and inventory within the department to ensure proper supplies are available.

8. Participates in:

a. Patient and Family-Centered Care culture

b. Q.I./process improvements, data collection, QC documentation, and/or CAP surveys as applicable to the assigned department.

c. Staff activities of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)

d. Friend-at-Work program and assists in training new hires as applicable/assigned

e. Staff meetings and committee meetings as assigned

9. Cost effectiveness: Efficient use of time in completing tasks accurately and timely. Mindful of appropriate use of laboratory funds through purchase requests and the observance of wasteful use of supplies

10. Works well without direct supervision.

11. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy course and Phlebotomy externship preferred.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy training program required. The achievement of 50 draws within previous roles will be considered in lieu of a completed training program.

B. Work Experience:

  • 1 year of phlebotomy experience required.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

  • Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant certification preferred.

D. Other Qualifications:


  • Position requires a valid Michigan Driver’s License, reliable transportation and good driving record in accordance with company policy.
  • Employees are required to immediately notify manager of any traffic violations incurred.
  • Background and reference check, which includes fingerprinting.
  • Inability to operate a motor vehicle at any point during employment will result in disqualification from position requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:


A. Physical Effort:

  • Strength: Position requires incumbent to occasionally perform physical activities requiring ability to push/pull objects of up to 40 pounds, constantly lift objects up 10 pounds; occasionally lift objects up to 30 pounds.
  • Manual Dexterity: Positions require incumbent to constantly perform simple motor skills such as walking, standing, constantly perform difficult manipulative skills such as repetitive arm use, and constantly perform difficult manipulative skills such as preparation of specimens for analysis and operation of laboratory equipment.
  • Coordination: Position requires incumbent to constantly perform gross body coordination such as walking and standing. Constantly performing tasks, which require eye-hand coordination such as analysis of specimens, and constantly performing tasks, which require arm-hand steadiness such as cleaning, calibration & operation of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Mobility: Position requires incumbent to constantly perform mobility skills such as walking and standing, sitting or standing for prolonged periods; and remain in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods. Frequently perform stooping along with performing manual dexterity and coordination functions.
  • Visual Discrimination: Position requires incumbent to constantly see objects far away as in locating exits, see objects closely as in reading thermometers, product labels and instrument readouts.
  • Hearing: Position requires incumbent to constantly hear normal sounds such as equipment operating and being able to hear pages, telephone conversations, etc. Distinguish sound as in responding to timers and/or audible alarms.
  • Concentration: Position requires incumbent to constantly be able to concentrate on fine details with constant amount of interruptions.
  • Attention Span: Position requires incumbent to attend to task/functions constantly for periods up to 60 minutes in length and to frequently attend to task/functions for periods exceeding 60 minutes in length.
  • Conceptualization: Position requires incumbent to constantly be able to understand and relate to specific ideas, concepts, and theories.
  • Memory: Position requires incumbent to constantly remember tasks and/or assignment given to self and others over both short- and long-term periods of time such as schedule of work, job assignments, etc.

B. Work Environment:

  • Employee may be exposed to:

o Blood, body fluids, body tissues or other biohazards constantly.

o Hazardous materials other than those above frequently.

o High, low or sudden fluctuations in temperatures occasionally.

o Toxins, cytotoxins, poisonous substances or other chemically hazardous materials frequently.
