Position Summary

Position performs total advanced practice nursing care and provides consultation and education to patients and families with pediatric cancer and hematologic disease under the direction of a physician.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Performs procedures including bone marrow aspiration, biopsy and delivery of intrathecal chemotherapy.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation of the medical record, including therapeutic roadmaps and ensuring all evaluations are current and complete.
  • Monitors medical conditions of patients, documenting and reporting changes when necessary.
  • Assists in the development and education of health care professionals in training including residents, fellows and nursing professionals.
  • Writes initial histories, assesses patients’ conditions and develops individual care plans for patients assigned.
  • Provides clinical management services for both inpatients and outpatients with acute cancer and hematologic disease participating in evaluation of patients requiring medical care, health maintenance, and/or patient and family education.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Takes active role in facilitating patient participation in clinical trials. Also assists with protocol education and compliance to patients and staff.
  • Monitors/ensures accuracy of patient medical records, maintains all required reports, records, statistics, etc.
  • Takes active role in chemotherapy orders and protocol compliance.
  • Enhances professional growth through educational programs, current literature, inservice meetings and workshops.

Other Functions

  • Works with a transdisciplinary team of investigators who lead ongoing studies to prevent and control cancer and other diseases through formalized postdoctoral training. Creates, manages, analyzes, and disseminates data to improve the care of children with cancer and childhood cancer survivors.
  • Assists with research studies, particularly in activities for national cooperative groups.
  • Leads research efforts as a principal investigator, and assists with institutional protocols, particularly research efforts for the Late Effects Clinic for childhood cancer survivors.
  • Assists physicians with examinations, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.

Job Location/Working Conditions

Normal clinic and inpatient hematology/oncology nursing unit; prolonged or extensive standing/walking, lifting and moving patients, supplies and equipment with variable work schedule.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Holds current certification in patient care field and required specialty.

Required Qualifications

Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.


REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

  • Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirements).
  • Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
  • Advanced Practical Nurse licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire.

Salary Range

$84,600.00 - $152,300.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
