Job Description

The Nurse Practitioner evaluates and treats patients in a variety of long-term care settings.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in evening and weekend call schedule.
  • Perform physical examinations;
  • Consult and refer patients to physicians, medical specialists and other health professionals as indicated;
  • Understand and comply with Universal Precautions, MSDS and HAZCOM procedures and policies as part of UNE’s comprehensive OSHA compliance program.
  • Document fully all aspects of patient care, and complete all required paperwork for billing and administrative purposes.
  • Analyze, diagnose and explain medical problems;
  • Take medical histories;
  • Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments;
  • Teach nursing staff, medical assistants and others clinical instructions as required.
  • Formulate diagnoses and treatment plans independently and/or in consultation with or referring to the supervising physician as appropriate
  • Assist in clinical instruction and supervision of medical, nursing and physician assistant students as assigned.
  • Keep abreast of relevant medical research, technology, and related issues by attending continuing education courses and professional meetings, reading journals, etc..
  • Understand and comply with the policies and procedures of long-term care settings (nursing facilities, retirement communities and assisted living facilities) that are assigned as part of regular work schedule.
  • Provide direct clinical care to patients and residents within established clinical guidelines:
    • consult and refer patients to physicians, medical specialists and other health professionals as indicated;
    • interview patients and residents;
    • take medical histories;
    • perform physical examinations;
    • analyze, diagnose and explain medical problems;
    • recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests and treatments;
    • perform specialized diagnostic physical exams and treatment procedures;
    • instruct and educate patients and residents, facility staff and family members in preventive and other health care;
    • confer with facility staff and physicians over the phone to discuss test results, hear emergency complaints and deal with similar situations and issues;
    • participate in evening and weekend call schedule.
  • Perform a variety of research and analysis tasks associated with medical diagnosis and treatment:
    • research unusual symptoms and treatment options through consultation with physicians and other medical specialists, literature review, etc.
    • review, analyze and determine the significance of a variety of diagnostic test results
    • formulate diagnoses and treatment plans independently and/or in consultation with or referring to the supervising physician as appropriate
  • Perform related duties as necessary and other duties as assigned.
  • Confer with facility staff and physicians over the phone to discuss test results, hear emergency complaints and deal with similar situations and issues;
  • Review, analyze and determine the significance of a variety of diagnostic test results
  • Interview patients and residents;
  • Deal regularly with community hospitals, physicians, other health care providers, insurance companies, area business employers, and other community organizations to refer and consult about specific cases, participate in community services, education projects and activities.
  • Order laboratory and other tests as appropriate.
  • Confer regularly with the Administrator and Medical Director, staff physicians, other Health Service staff and various UNE/UNECOM personnel to consult/refer on specific patients, plan and coordinate activities, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems, and so forth.
  • Instruct and educate patients and residents, facility staff and family members in preventive and other health care;
  • Research unusual symptoms and treatment options through consultation with physicians and other medical specialists, literature review, etc.
  • Perform specialized diagnostic physical exams and treatment procedures;
  • Understand and comply with the University of New England Safety Manual, paying special attention to the Responsibilities Section, Chapter 8, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Chapter 17, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). (The Safety Manual can be found on-line on UNE’s intranet).

Qualifications
  • Current and appropriate Nurse Practitioner’s License from the State of Maine.
  • Ability to explain medical problems and treatments in accurate and understandable lay language.
  • Broad base of technical knowledge and skills needed to perform all assigned clinical, administrative and academic duties.
  • Experience in an academic/teaching environment desirable.
  • Ability to use tact, discretion and sensitivity in dealing with patients, residents, facility staff and family members.
  • Relevant experience in geriatrics and long-term care settings.
  • Good informal teaching skills.
  • Ability to speak clearly and comfortably.
  • EMT or Advanced Cardiac Life Support training/certification.
  • Good interviewing and counseling skills.
  • A graduate of an accredited Geriatric (preferable), Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner Program, with previous geriatric experience preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with physicians, health service staff, hospitals, health care providers, and others both inside and outside the University community.
