Position Summary:

The Nurse Navigator in the Pre-Anesthesia Assessment Center is responsible for ensuring all requirements are met prior to surgery. Working within the EMR to apply the nursing process through evaluation and implementation of the patient's pre-anesthesia clearance and preparedness. Works closely with nursing peers in a virtual environment to ensure a seamless transition through the pre-surgical process. Uses comprehensive assessment skills and big-picture thinking to act as a patient advocate. Completes pre-surgery phone calls to patients providing arrival times, specific medication instruction, and reinforcement of surgeon instructions.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
College Diploma in Nursing
CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Registered Professional Nurse (RN) License Illinois upon hire and Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One (1) Healthcare/Medical - Nurse: Registered Nurse.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Pre-Anesthesia testing requirements. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple pre-surgical patients. Demonstrates the ability to multitask and interact with the care team in a proactive, positive, professional manner. Must possess excellent verbal, written, organizational and critical thinking skills. Display a high comfort level with the EMR. Demonstrate commitment to surgical patients, caregivers, and to the organization. Attendance to staff meetings to keep abreast of change, safety, requirements, and new policies.
Essential Functions:
- Independently monitoring and updating the surgical clearance work que three to five days prior to surgery date.
- Be a resource to peers ensuring pre-anesthesia requirements are completed.
- Maintaining professional communications with PAAC providers and outside PCPs to obtain documents of tests and additional forms.
- Completion of pre-op checklists prior to surgery.
- Maintains knowledge of tests, medications, and contraindications associated with anesthesia.
- Maintains knowledge of tests, medications, pre-surgical anesthesia guidelines, and EMR documentation standards.
- Completes review of symptoms and medication reconciliation as needed during report calls.
- Ensures the patient is ready for surgery by checking the H&P is available and complete, labs and tests are reviewed by the provider, and the patient has been cleared.
- Serves as a liaison with the surgeon's office, PCP, DHI, ASC, outside surgeon's office, PAAC nurses, Pre-Op, and OR staff.
- Completing any needed reinforcement of bowel prep, ERAS, or CHG instructions.
- Provides support and direction to surgery schedulers, surgeon's office, and OR schedulers.
- Performs report calls, for Main OR or Champaign ASC, to patients having surgery informing them of their arrival time, surgery time, medications to take and avoid according to current anesthesia guidelines.
