Title: Nurse Consultant – CLPPP

Location: Remote/Virtual - Must Live in Michigan
Occasional In-Person Meetings Required - Lansing, MI Office

Purpose: This position is a Nurse Consultant for the state’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The Consultant will provide nursing consultation and technical assistance to nursing and healthcare providers across the public and private sector to assist those providers in managing cases of childhood lead poisoning. The Consultant will assist with ongoing improvement of health care programs, practices, and standards related to childhood lead poisoning and prevention.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Attend local coalition and other meetings on behalf of the CLPPP as assigned.
  • Maintain records and nursing notes, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
  • Maintain liaison with other professionals, community agencies and interested parties relative to program review and appraisal and problem resolution.
  • Coordinate efforts with other MDHHS Lead Services Section programs.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of CLPPP policy and position/issue papers, such as the statewide testing/screening plan.
  • Always represent the best interests of MDHHS and MPHI.
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance to local health department lead programs; respond to request for support in a timely manner.
  • Review surveillance reports and initiate contact with local health departments and/or other healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Support follow-up of all EBL (>3.5 mcg/dl) children.
  • Support provision of timely case management of all children with EBLS >20 mcg/dl.
  • Provide information and guidance in the development of policies and standards of nursing practices to meet the changing needs of nursing and health care programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: A master’s degree in nursing, public health, or a health field.

Experience: Three years of professional experience in clinical specialization, teaching, supervision, administration, or consultation, including two years of post-master’s degree experience, required. Prefer education background in or experience in public health nursing and/or environmental health programming.

Important Skills and Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of public health system in Michigan.
  • Knowledge of medical services, social services, dietary services, rehabilitation services, and environmental services pertaining to lead poisoning.
  • Knowledge of the activities of educational and social agencies as related to local health care.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of general nursing principles, practices, and standards.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical effort typical of working in a standard office environment. In-state travel to communities and/or medical provider practices required. Requires valid vehicle operator’s license and occasional travel within the State, including overnights. There may be times when work outside of regular hours is necessary for the completion of a project. Materials and supplies can be bulky and may weigh up to 40 lbs.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position will support the Division of Environmental Health’s -Lead Services Section by assist in nursing case management response for children with elevated blood lead levels throughout the state.
