Overview:

We are seeking a Nuclear Facility Safety Engineer who will provide nuclear safety support for the nonreactor nuclear facilities at the Laboratory. This position resides in the Nuclear and Criticality Safety Services Group in the Nuclear and Radiological Protection Division, Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Perform, document, and maintain technical safety analyses for new and/or existing Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities/activities and below Hazard Category 3 (radiological) facilities/activities, including hazard identification, hazard categorization, hazard analysis, accident analysis, and establishment of hazard controls and their functional requirements.
  • Understand DOE requirements and guidance in order to assist in the development and implementation of safety basis analysis of policies, practices, and procedures
  • Provide technical training for ORNL staff in nuclear safety basis development, implementation, and maintenance
  • Evaluate modifications, experiments, operations, and safety basis documentation in coordination with the ORNL independent safety review programs

  • Ensure technical compliance with 10 CFR 830 Subparts A and B affecting facility safety through implementation of ORNL Standards Based Management Systems and internal procedures
  • Provide technical safety-related support for the operation of Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities/activities and below Hazard Category 3 (radiological) facilities/activities
  • Coordinate with facility operations personnel and regulators to achieve and maintain approval of compliant safety basis documentation
  • Validate, maintain, and operate computer codes to support nuclear facility safety analysis activities


Basic Qualifications:

  • Technical writing and analytical skills
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience at a DOE nuclear facility.
  • A Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree in an engineering discipline


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated familiarity with DOE safety analysis requirements, including DOE-STD-1027 and DOE-STD-3009, is preferred.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Knowledge of hazard categorization and facility safety analysis techniques is preferred.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Demonstrated experience using radiation transport and/or shielding computer models is preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
