Job Description


NPS Unit: Interior Region 1. NPS-Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program Location: Options: Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY; Washington, DC NPS Representative Helen Mahan, Interior Region 1 RTCA Program Manager Project Title: Outdoor Recreation Engagement with Schools and Families Position Description: Projects include but are not limited to the following:


  • Research and document best practices, case studies and new opportunities for connecting urban schools and families with outdoor recreation and stewardship activities.
  • Collaborate with the Stephen T. Mather Building Arts and Craftsmanship High School in New York City on a pilot project that introduces students and families to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Learning goals: Candidate will work closely with IR1-NPS-RTCA team, Mather High School Education Program Manager, and partners as part of research work and pilot project. The candidate will gain valuable experience in project research, planning, writing, and presenting findings. Through work with the National Park Service and various partners, the candidate will learn about many aspects of outdoor recreation and conservation planning and will have opportunities as follows:


  • Advance research, analytical, and documentation skills
  • Engage with school leaders, community members and youth to build awareness of local outdoor recreation and stewardship activities
  • Develop and implement work plans to accomplish planning and critical thinking required for a successful project
  • Exposure to a variety of NPS, state and local park and trail sites and projects
  • Expand oral and written communication abilities
  • Experience collaborating as part of a team
Mentoring: The supervisor will mentor and collaborate with the candidate to outline professional development goals, a work plan, and resources needed to accomplish project completion. Candidate will have frequent contact with IR1-RTCA team members and Mather High School Education Program Manager for guidance and support. Qualifications: Knowledge, skills and experience desired:


  • Excellent written and oral communication abilities
  • Undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree
  • Educational interests in community planning, natural resources, environmental studies, social sciences, or outdoor recreation management
  • Ability and interest in researching, synthesizing, applying, and prioritizing information from a broad range of sources and documenting findings
  • Proficiency with various software platforms including virtual communication, mapping, and document production programs
  • Enjoys working as part of a team
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision


Additional Qualifications


  • Must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. National
  • Must be currently enrolled in an accredited institution
  • Must be between 19 and 30 years of age
  • Must be able to pass a federal background check
Position Dates: May 23-August 12+ (12-week rigorous internship). Dates to be coordinated with candidate's scheduling needs Housing Available: Housing is candidate responsibility, allowance provided Vehicle/License Required: A valid state driver's license is preferred, but not required. Work Environment: Work may be performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings including office buildings, schools, park areas and trails. Site visits may require light to moderate levels of walking or hiking. Comments Internship Support.


$6,240 stipend for 12 week rigorous internship; $1,200 housing expense paid ($400 per month); $1,000 travel expense total to/from the duty station, Covered by workers comp insurance, Health care coverage available
