Job Description

OVERVIEW:

The Mason role builds, repairs, demolishes, and refinishes civil and structural parts of the refinery utilizing a variety of materials such as cement, mortar, plaster, brick, concrete block and stone. The mason will be required to utilize the proper masonry tools including but not limited to cement mixers, shovels, floats, rakes, power or hand trowels or power or hand screeds, power vibrators, air hammer, rotary hammers, and masonry saws. The work is split between indoor and outdoor work, both in an industrial environment. The employee must possess the fitness and ability to perform the tasks safely in the costal Louisiana environmental conditions.

DETAILED ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares and mixes materials for the work according to specifications, such as mortar, paste, cement, and slacking lime, using hand and power mixers.
  • Knowledge of blueprint reading, specifications, building codes, trades manuals, and other building trades.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Examine concrete forms to ensure they are properly constructed and can hold the correct amount of cement to complete a job.
  • Builds walls, fences, walkways, roads, and other structures using bricks, stone, concrete blocks, or marble.
  • Places brick or concrete blocks on mortar bed.
  • Thorough understanding of math and geometry.
  • Cuts or saws bricks to fit around windows and doors.
  • May perform various kinds of carpentry work.
  • Maintains equipment and tools used, such as mortar mixers, masonry saws, tuck pointers, grinders and electric hammers.
  • Carves out and builds structures and surfaces with bricks or concrete blocks.
  • Examines brickwork to ensure structure is built correctly.
  • Applies first coat or finish coat of plaster using plastering devices such as trawls, also patches plaster breaks and cracks.
  • Knowledge of all elements of masonry work.
  • Extensive knowledge of brick laying techniques and procedures
  • Mixes mortar and grout to be used to lay brick.
  • Measures distances to lay out work.
  • Sets tile floors and walls after spreading surface with materials such as cement grout and paste; uses terrazzo machines for the application and polishing of terrazzo.
  • Spreads mortar onto brick or block surface with a trowel.
  • Works in a safe manner following all refinery safety requirements.
  • Installs, finishes, and patches holes in drywall.
  • Level, smooth and spread concrete using a variety of tools, including shovels, floats, rakes, power or hand trowels or power or hand screeds.
  • Monitor how heat, cold and wind affect the curing of the concrete throughout the entire building process.
  • Direct other cement masons and employees to guarantee that concrete is poured and smoothed correctly to prevent future problems with the build.
  • Compact concrete with power vibrator and produce a rough concrete surface using a broom.
  • Mold expansion edges and joints using jointers and straightedge as well as edging tools.
  • Prepares surface with hand and power sanders and buffers before spreading paste on surface.
  • Constructs, repairs or demolishes concrete bases, walls, floors, chimneys, sidewalks, and roadways by using electric rotary hammers, air hammers, masonry saws, and other hand and power tools of the trade.
  • May assist in the training of lower-level Mason-Plasterers and others.
  • Direct cement truck driver to park to ensure that concrete can be poured in the correct spot and move the truck’s chute to put concrete in the right places.
  • Lays cement bricks and blocks for interior and exterior walls.
  • Set forms designed to hold concrete to desired depth and pitch while aligning them.
  • Estimates time and materials.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces ceilings, tiles, floor tiles, and exterior roofing.
  • May perform masonry restoration and reproduction work on historic buildings.


WORK EXPERIENCES:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience working in a mason position in an industrial or related setting.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or GED is preferred.

  • Walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl, and climb constantly throughout the shift
