Position Summary:
University of Tennessee Medical Center Nurse Graduate RN
The University of Tennessee Medical Center provides a one-year transition to practice program for new graduate nurses. The purpose of the program is to facilitate a successful transition from nursing student into professional nursing practice. Our goal is to facilitate the highest level of professional nursing practice to improve patient outcomes and retain nursing staff.
New nurses receive the education and support necessary to develop clinical knowledge, skills and judgment to become a high performing nurse. The program focuses on leadership, patient outcomes and professional role. Support is provided by the unit nurse manager, clinical nurse specialist/clinical nurse educator, nurse residency program coordinator, and unit-based nurse preceptors to integrate core content in the areas of professional development, leadership at the bedside and patient safety outcomes.
Expert nurses facilitate monthly sessions with emphasis on:
- Communication skills
- Patient safety
- Individual professional development plan
- Research-based practice
- Critical thinking
- Leadership abilities
The nurse must participate in all scheduled educational sessions and will complete a capstone evidence-based project over the 12-month period.
Under direct supervision of the supporting staff, the nurse provides nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with the UT Medical Center's standards of care. The nurse is evaluated using the performance expectations associated with the unit-based competency training and nurse residency program. Successful completion of the nurse residency program includes:
- Capstone evidence-based practice project
- Scheduled monthly educational sessions
- Hospital performance evaluation tools
- NRP surveys
- Completion of a competency-based unit-specific orientation

- Who can participate in the program?
Our program is available for all new graduate registered nurses with less than 12 months of experience. If you have not had hospital experience and are looking to join our team, you may also qualify for this program.
- What is included in the program?
Our program offers several opportunities for nurses. You receive a unit based clinical orientation with a preceptor. You also participate in monthly interactive educational sessions. Each session includes a "Tales from the Bedside" where you learn and share experiences together as a residency cohort. Residents complete an evidence-based project.
- How often is the program offered?
The Nurse is offered 3 times a year, corresponding with most graduation dates. You are enrolled into the program upon hire with a cohort of residents. All nurse residents receive a detailed schedule during orientation.

Position Qualification:
BSN preferred, ASN will be required to complete a contract to complete BSN within 3 years of hire.
