Position Summary


The Network Security Administrator is a high-impact technical role that plays an integral part in the development, implementation, remediation, and compliance of network security across the enterprise. This position works directly within the core Information Security team and reports to the Network Security Specialist. This position’s primary responsibility is involved directly in supporting the planning, engineering, deployment, maintenance, and continual improvement of enterprise security and network control defenses and related management tools.

Duties And Responsibilities


Operational Oversight


  • Improve and work on existing logging strategy for collecting and analyzing logs including SIEM integration, correlation, and alerting.
  • Develop actionable reports using available network security tools.
  • Create, update and facilitate network change requests, service requests, or triage of problems within the environment.
  • Assist with configuration, maintenance, upgrades, troubleshooting and monitoring of both cloud and on-premise security infrastructure such as firewalls and VPN . Perform systems administration support activities for various network and cloud security systems as needed.


Project Assistance


  • Execute projects on enterprise security and network management with direction from the Network Security Specialist.
  • Where needed, work alongside team members to assist with the work of the full enterprise system lifecycle: system design, deployment, patching, securing, improvement, and decommission.


Incident Response


  • Assist with the implementation of technologies to secure critical University resources against intrusions and attacks.
  • Implement systems and software to detect intrusion attempts and anomalies, malware, phishing, and all other related security incidents.
  • Participate with UNIT’s incident response team and Managed Detection & Response program.


Research, Development, & Automation


  • Develop network infrastructure integration to support procedures and processes within the department.
  • Perform other duties and assist with projects as assigned.
  • Create relevant departmental and functional documentation.


Minimum Qualifications


Formal Education


  • Bachelor’s degree or other relevant certifications, such as Palo Alto Networks Certified Network Security Administrator ( PCNSA )


Work Experience


  • 3 years’ experience working with enterprise firewalls and related policy configurations
  • 5 years’ work experience in the IT field (regardless of sector)


Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills)


  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with a strong commitment to quality
  • High degree of competence in analyzing user needs and security issues and providing solutions
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of security issues
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a highly motivated team; simultaneously managing multiple assignments and demands at times


Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)


  • Knowledge of related security and network best practices
  • Stays current and maintains effective level of expertise with technology advances in computer security via seminars, literature, and formal training
  • Functional understanding of application, network, database, physical, and system security and related computer technology and concepts
  • Experience with managing network infrastructure through command line interfaces
  • Thorough understanding of the OSI model including associated network protocols such as TCP /IP, UDP , OSPF , BGP , DHCP , DNS , NAT


Preferred Qualifications


Formal Education


  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in information technology, business, audit, or related technology field
  • Certifications in wired, wireless, and/or telephony networking ( CCNP , JNCIS = ENT , PCNSA , PCNSE etc.)


Work Experience


  • Experience working in a higher education setting
  • 3 years’ experience working with enterprise firewalls and related policy configurations on next-generation firewalls (e.g., Palo Alto, Juniper)
  • 5+ years’ work experience in the network or security field (regardless of sector)
  • 5 years’ experience designing and supporting enterprise wired and wireless networks


Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills)


  • Strong analytical skills in identifying trends and making technical decisions


Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)


  • Cloud networking and related management within providers such as Azure, AWS , GCP
  • Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems and processes
  • Malware mitigation
  • Experience creating and maintaining documentation to support procedures and processes
  • Forensics experience analyzing NetFlows, packet captures, and network logs
  • Experience working with authentication and authorization methodologies, including two-factor, single sign-on ( SSO ), and directory services ( LDAP , AD) that support identity and access management initiatives
  • Intrusion detection and prevention utilizing an IDS / IPS
  • Vulnerability management and penetration testing
  • Incident response
  • Web and application security
  • Encryption ( SSL , Digital Certificates, PKI )

Environmental conditions: (any unusual/adverse conditions such as exposure to chemicals, noise, illumination, air quality, weather exposure etc.). This position supports a hybrid work schedule in which some days of the week will require work on campus and some days may be worked in the individual’s remote location. This position requires the individual to be on-call in the event of an escalation from our Managed Detection & Response vendor. There may be limited travel to external University data centers in the event on-site network maintenance is required.
