Description of Job

The position works to implement the registration element of the National Historic Preservation Act and the State Register Act in the State of Colorado.
The Historian provides determinations of eligibility for the National and State Registers. Additionally, the position will provide support for the core duties of the Preservation Planning Unit, including tax credit review, development and implementation of the statewide Preservation Plan and may also assist with the Centennial Farms and Ranches and Roadside Markers programs, as well as other Unit responsibilities as necessary, both independently and as part of a team.
Duties:
  • Works with volunteers and interns.
  • Provides support to interns and/or fellows that are working to advance program goals for History Colorado and the Preservation Planning Unit.
  • Travels to potentially eligible properties across the state to offer support and guidance to property owners/stewards.
  • Participates in the planning for and successful execution of the State and National Register Review Board Meetings.
  • Provides guidance and formal determinations of eligibility in consultation with other staff to potential nominators.
  • Provides technical information and assistance to property owners/stewards (both public and private) who are preparing nomination forms for submission to the State Review Board, the History Colorado Board of Directors, and the National Park Service.
  • Builds relationships with History Colorado staff in other departments and continually identifies opportunities for collaboration to advance program goals and best serve the people of Colorado.
  • Supplies information about available preservation incentives, including grants and tax credits, that properties may become eligible for as a result of designation in the State or National Registers.
  • Coordinates with the History Colorado Marketing and Communications team to develop engaging and informative stories and digital media posts about the State and National Register Programs.
  • Assists with other duties of the History Colorado Preservation Planning Unit, as assigned. Other duties may include assisting with the development and implementation of the statewide Preservation Plan, the Centennial Farms and Ranches Program, and the Roadside Marker Program.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service, including providing program information via phone, email, and meetings (both “in community” and virtual) to a variety of stakeholders and others interested in historic preservation.
  • Enters information from completed State and National Register nominations into an online database.
  • Assists in the research, preparation, editing, and rewriting of information entered in the State and National Register nomination forms.
  • Works with colleagues in the Preservation Planning Unit and other staff to identify gaps in State and National Register representation, particularly for resources in rural Colorado and in communities that have been historically underserved by the State and National Register programs.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • Experience interpreting and providing guidance on the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines is required.
  • Experience in historical research and writing is required.
  • Direct and demonstrable experience authentically engaging with individuals and communities that have been historically marginalized and/or underserved by the State and National Register programs is strongly preferred.
  • The ability to effectively communicate in Spanish is desirable.
  • Understanding of or experience in preservation law is desirable.
  • The person holding this position must meet the Professional Qualification Standards in Federal Regulations 36 CFR Part 61 Appendix A for one of the preservation disciplines - History, Architectural History, Architecture, or Historic Architecture.
  • Cultural resource management and/or direct experience administering historic preservation programs is desirable.
