JOB OBJECTIVE: The San Jacinto Museum is managed as a joint public-private partnership between the private nonprofit San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield Association (SJMBA) and the Texas Historical Commission (THC) as established by an Operating Agreement. Under this agreement, the SJMBA is responsible for the museum’s operation and management, including revenue-generating operations and visitor services. The Texas Historical Commission’s Museum Director (an employee of the THC under the direction of the site’s Executive Director) is responsible for providing museum business knowledge as well as standards and guidance while maintaining clear, open, and timely communication with the site’s Executive Director. The position will ensure that all THC policies, procedures, and standards are addressed and adhered to in the preservation, operation, and maintenance of the museum and its collections of artifacts and documents. The position is responsible for major interpretive and exhibit development projects and will advise the SJMBA on business and program development to enhance the operation as well as the stewardship of the museum buildings and collections. The THC seeks a seasoned museum professional to coordinate with nationally and regionally significant cultural institutions to increase the museum’s exposure, brand identity, and reputation while providing guidance and business advice to the SJMBA to safeguard state assets, enhance business operations and help grow visitation and revenue. Under the supervision and direction of the Texas Historical Commission (THC) and the San Jacinto Museum and Battlefield Association’s Board of Trustees (SJMBA), this position performs advanced managerial work providing direction and guidance in strategic operations and planning of the San Jacinto Museum.
Work involves directing museum operational staff; providing leadership in the management; and directing and participating in programming, fundraising, marketing, development of strategic vision, collection stewardship, general business management, and state funding financial management. Responsible for providing museum business knowledge as well as standards and guidance while maintaining clear, open, and timely communication with the site’s Executive Director. May train others. Work under minimal supervision, with extensive latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
