Job Description

The position of MYC Crew Leader is done for the purpose of overseeing high school education crews within a Natural Resources curriculum and leading students on educational field experiences. This includes providing leadership for MYC student work crews; facilitating and coordinating educational components of the program; and building relationships with students to assist and empower them to become leaders and to ensure positive student outcomes.


Essential Job Functions:


Essential job functions will include but are not limited to:

  • Work with MYC Teachers, Program Coordinator and Administrator to support and coordinate educational components of the program, emphasizing the integration of field-based projects into the classroom curriculum.
  • Keep accurate records to include student contracts, work accomplished, student attendance, and other program related data using school district data bases and computer software such as Word and Excel to create documents.
  • Maintain Essential Skills Journals and Grading Policies
  • Assist the MYC Program Coordinator/Teachers in developing curricula that integrate Natural Resources program into the classroom, providing general organizational support, and working one-on-one with MYC and RLA students.
  • Support the MYC Program Coordinator/Teachers by facilitating lesson plans during MYC class time and in the field.
  • Support MYC Students in all academic classes.
  • Facilitate MYC students in gathering, recording, and analyzing field data.

  • Provide dynamic leadership for MYC student work crews on field-based, Natural Resources projects and trainings.
  • Work as a team with fellow crew leader to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships with community partners.
  • Transport MYC students to and from work sites.
  • Co-facilitate and supervise several overnight work-based learning experiences.
  • Research, develop, and implement contacts for MYC crews.
  • Provide the sole or group supervision during program-based field trips and crew outings in varied community settings.
  • Work with other crew leader on program and project responsibilities, including communication with community partners, data management and record keeping

  • Manage work, coordinate and implement the project components of program with a focus on providing students with hands-on educational and work experiences.
  • Work to secure long-term financial stability through partnerships and grants and assist the MYC supervisor with planning and scheduling program activities.
  • Work with crews on job sites; monitor safety compliance; handle on-site public relations; operate RSD activity van; transport MYC Crew to and from worksites; operate motorized equipment to perform job duties, such as line trimmers, hedge trimmers, or power blowers
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners.
  • Assign and coordinate crew members, equipment and materials for planned work projects; meet with community partners; ensure supplies and equipment are available for scheduled work.
  • Provide direction to MYC crew members; monitor work of the crew for quality and compliance with partner and contract expectations; report work quality issues, conflicts, and other problems to program supervisor for appropriate action; may train new crew members; instruct and direct work of MYC Crew members, community volunteers, and other program participants and ensure professional completion of projects.
  • Occasionally (approximately 3-5 times/yr.) transport other RLA students on field trips.
  • Build healthy relationships with students by empowering youth to find their own solutions and answers, clearly communicating expectations, and being consistent and fair in supporting them to meet expectations.
  • Demonstrate and model effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Support the education of all students at RLA.
  • Act as a role model for high school students whose needs cannot be met at a large high school.
  • Foster positive student business relationships with partners.
  • Provide opportunities for students to become leaders in their community.
  • Effectively communicate with a variety of people, including students, MYC and RLA staff, community partners, school district administration, and the general public.
  • Engage MYC students to explore and understand their world.
  • Work as a part of the MYC staff team to support and empower MYC students.
  • Educate students on how to become leaders in their community.
  • Teach students how to build and maintain community relationships.

Qualifications:


Experience/Education Required:

  • Experience facilitating youth educational opportunities.
  • A clean driving record, with no more than 3 speeding tickets in the last three years.
  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent work experience teaching Natural Resources or Apprenticeship programs.
  • Experience in building community relationships and partnerships.
  • First Aid and CPR Cards
  • Ability to obtain an OSHA 10 Card
  • Experience working with youth whose needs have not been met in traditional educational settings

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:


Skills to: utilize data reporting systems, lead and coordinate parent and community events; operate standard office equipment including computer, telephone, printer and copier; effectively use Microsoft Office computer applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook; effectively use Synergy, communicate effectively in English orally both in person and by phone, and in writing with a wide variety of people; use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation; strong organizational skills;

Knowledge of: how to maintain strong working relationships with local community agencies and partners focused on providing apprenticeship training opportunities and educational experiences to ensure successful student outcomes;


Ability to: stand/walk/sit for extended periods of time; create and maintain accurate records, understand and carry out both oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work; collaborate and work effectively as a team member; understand adolescent development and apply knowledge to managing students; multi-task and manage numerous projects and details at one time; maintain regular and acceptable attendance.


Significant Physical Abilities include: Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, including snow, rain, and hot temperatures, for extended amounts of time. Ability to perform physically demanding work on a regular basis, including construction based tasks such as roofing, welding, climbing, etc. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds in weight in a safe manner; pushing/pulling balancing, stooping, reaching/handling/manual dexterity, talking/hearing conversations and other sounds (potential hazards), visual acuity/depth perception/with or without visual accommodation.


Bilingual/Bicultural preferred


Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hours per day. 196 work days, prorated based on start date for 2023-2024 school year.
