Some of what you'll be doing:

As a Journey Millwright you will need to follow your field supervisor lead for day-to-day field activities assigned to Port Construction Services (PCS) crews and work teams, ensuring work and assure that work activities are performed in a safe and efficient manner. In this role you will complete a wide variety of tasks, generally related to welding and metal fabrication, in support of all the various business groups within the Port of Seattle as a member of PCS.

  • You will repair and replace damaged or broken equipment components, fabrication of bracing or supports systems.
  • You will request parts, supplies, and/or materials needed for projects.
  • You will need to complete the required LMS computer training, working from heights, first aid, including in-person training.
  • You will repair damaged or broken items either in the shop, or onsite at one of the Port’s PCS and/or Aviation properties.
  • You will move and maneuver metal stock onto work/cutting tables and/or into a metal shear or other cutting apparatus, to cut necessary pieces.
  • You will assist in reporting injuries, incidents and close calls on Origami as well as notify your managers.
  • You will provide information and respond to inquiries from PCS Managers, General Supervisors, Field Supervisors, field workers contractors, Port staff and the general public regarding assigned projects.
  • You will be expected to comply with all Port of Seattle rules, policies, and construction safety regulations, in addition to the PCS work rules.
  • You will tack and/or weld metal components together to fabricate/create parts for machinery or equipment used on Port-owned properties.
  • You will need to have journey level knowledge pertaining to the millwright trade. Which includes welding and metal fabrication. You will complete a variety of tasks such as measure, layout, bend, shape, form and install metal, laminate, plastic components.
Who you are:
  • Collaborative & Independent – You are able to work as part of a team and partner with staff to achieve results. You are also capable of working independently with little guidance to complete tasks.
  • Knowledgeable – You are able to perform all journey-level millwright work activities, work effectively from technical drawings, familiar with all work-related safety codes, regulations, and requirements, have the ability to work at heights, over water, and in confined spaces, and can properly use rigging, personal safety equipment, and industry required tools. You have knowledge of construction means, methods and practices of respective trade. Additionally, you are comfortable using a cell phone, email, and job tracking system to receive notifications of new work orders and/or requests.
  • Desired – We hope you have experience building conveyor systems assemble bearings, drive packages, and machinery, journey-level millwright work in the maintenance and/or construction field, certified welder, layout, and small job estimating experience, and knowledge of repair procedures.
  • Experienced – You have five (5) years of applicable journey-level millwright experience that encompasses the knowledge and skills of the daily crew job tasks.

  • Educated – You possess a High School Diploma or equivalent and you have a current WABO welding certification.
What else you need to know:
  • Union Representation – This position is represented by the Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters union under a Port of Seattle Maintenance agreement. This agreement pays at 88% of union scale, and includes paid holidays, floater days and paid vacation.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle.
  • Overtime Eligible – You are eligible for overtime pay in this role.
  • Work Schedule – The standard work week for the Night/Day Journey Millwright is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. This role will likely work the Swing Shift, which is from 1900 to 0530 Monday night through Friday morning 4x10hrs. The Night/Day millwright may be asked to work daytime shift (Mon-Fri 5x8hrs), depending on project needs. You may be required to respond to emergent work on weekends and holidays as appropriate.
  • Work Environment – You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, over water, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. You will also be required to access the Port of Seattle Police Department equipment, office locations, systems and/or vehicles. In compliance with Federal and State laws as the successful candidate, you will be required to pass a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) criminal history background check. You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 90 days of hire. As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
