Job Description

Duties

Support the NIST microbiology program to develop microbial standards by providing project management and data analysis. Leads development planning for microbial genomics team in the production of reference materials including mock communities and DNA-based materials. Specifically, develops protocols for growth, molecular modification, and characterization of a wide array of microorganisms, including pathogens with limited supervision. Manages, analyzes, and interprets data from a diverse set of microbial instrumentation including flow cytometry, particle counters, mass-spectrometry, DNA extraction, dPCR, and NGS. Keep consistent documentation and data entry. Lead multi-person, multi-center projects and working groups including meeting scheduling, correspondences, and updating shared documents. Assist in running interlaboratory studies and consortia related to standards for microbiome studies, fecal microbiota transplants, and rapid microbial methods.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

IN ADDITION: To qualify, applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level (or ZP-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as three to five-years experience with microbial genomics and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Familiarity with various bioinformatic analysis software of metagenomics. Experience managing team projects, running consortia, and planning/hosting workshops. Proficient knowledge of microbiology, genomics, metagenomics, instrumentation, and computers.
