Job Duties

Microbiologist - Diagnostic Bacteriologist #00615 - Warrenton
(Scientist I, Pay Band 4)
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Division of Animal and Food Industry Services is seeking a Diagnostic Bacteriologist to perform routine aerobic and anaerobic bacterial isolations and identifications on samples submitted for diagnostic and regulatory purposes at the Regional Animal Health Laboratory located in Warrenton, VA. The selected individual will perform identification and susceptibility testing of isolates (using the Sensititre ARIS 2 automated system), parasitology testing, and molecular testing using the ABI 7500. They will cross-train in Serology for regulatory and non-regulatory tests and in water testing. The Bacteriologist will also be responsible for the quality control testing on media in the microbiology laboratory. Test results are entered into an automated Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). This position works collaboratively, and as a team member, to assist with other related laboratory procedures as needed (such as with necropsies). Occasional minimal weekend work is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of a variety of microbiology and laboratory procedures with an emphasis on diagnostic bacteriology, parasitology, serology, media preparation, safety and research knowledge as related to laboratory specialties. Demonstrated computer proficiency to include basic office software and laboratory management systems, along with sound analytical skills, and exceptional customer service and communication skills. Proven ability to follow oral and written directions with precision and accuracy; to work with technical equipment; to develop logical conclusions; and to work collaboratively within a team environment. Current or recent clinical and/or diagnostic veterinary or human medical microbiology, laboratory quality control, or regulatory experience desired along with experience working with ISO 17025 or similar laboratory quality management system. Testing formats require precision, manual dexterity and visual acuity. H.S. Diploma/GED required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation form a college or university with a degree in Microbiology, Biology, or a closely related scientific field that is supplemented with work in a clinical microbiology laboratory. Regulatory experience in animal health technology including bacteriology, serology, parasitology, and mycology also preferred. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding qualifications may substitute for this education and experience.
