Scope of Responsibility:

The Tom's of Maine Micro Lab Supervisor is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring the Micro Control programs that ensure all production meets the requirements of QS 023 - Microbiological Control. The Micro Lab Supervisor is responsible for directing conformance to the corporate microbiology standards, as well as coaching and mentoring site personnel with regard to micro control. The Micro Lab Supervisor is responsible for building and supporting strategic relationships with local, divisional and global teams in support of the micro control programs. Supervises the Plant Microbiologist.


Core responsibilities:

  • Conduct and report microbiological verification of water systems, C&S procedures, and other quality related operating standards.
  • Coach and train plant personnel and laboratory staff with regard to potential micro issues, risk avoidance, hygiene and good housekeeping practices.
  • Support supplier certification process to reduce level of in-plant micro testing.
  • Serve as local subject matter expert during external audits by regulatory agencies or other third parties.
  • Devise and execute a program of routine problem resolution and continuous improvement.
  • Develop the on-site microbiological sampling and testing program for water, raw materials, work-in-process (WIP), environmental samples and finished products at the facility, including optimization of C&S procedures. The plan must be based on QS 023.
  • Provide support to plant in resolving nonconformance issues and identify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Oversee Microbiology Laboratory operations including analyst training and qualification, purchasing, CEB planning, tech transfer, scheduling and staffing. Provide leadership for the Microbiology team.
  • Participate in internal and external audits (contract manufacturers & labs, suppliers, etc.) Function as part of the plant Quality, CPM, C&S & Water teams.
  • Review all change control with microbiological implications (e.g., equipment changes)
  • Interpret and communicate corporate microbiological program requirements to local teams. Act as resident subject matter expert for microbiology.
  • Interface with Global & Divisional Quality/Microbiology teams to provide input on programs, procedures and methods, and receive guidance & support on implementation of programs.
  • Ensure the proper validation of local micro test methods, equipment, and personnel.
  • Approve microbiology documentation authorizing product release (data review and approval, and entry into LIMs and/or SAP).
  • Ensure failure investigations and OOS results are properly documented.


Additional responsibilities specific to the role:

Backup lab analyst if needed


Education and Experience:

  • Familiarity with and ability to execute GMP compliant failure investigations, CAPA, deviation, and change documentation.
  • Minimum three to five years’ experience in a GMP environment (Personal Care, Pharmaceutical, Food, Environmental). This experience should include working in a manufacturing environment both in a lab and with exposure to plant floor micro control programs.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology or related major. Must include significant coursework in Microbiology (at least four courses).

  • Ability to work independently with initiative, to set priorities, and to execute multiple tasks within a prescribed time frame.
  • Creates and nurtures practical networks (with Supply Chain, Technology, Legal & Regulatory departments) that foster teamwork and empowerment to strategically manage micro requirements.
  • Communicates information clearly, simply and in a timely manner. Good written and spoken English required.
  • Engages Site, Division and Manufacturing and Technology Management as necessary to provide appropriate leadership and resources to ensure full conformance to the Quality and Micro Control Standards.
  • Demonstrates the ability to apply continuous improvement tools to affect positive change (MSI, CPM, etc.)
  • Understands the linkages and interdependencies between and among supply chain and demand chain KPIs.

Salary Range $70,400 - $103,950 USD
