Team Gilbert has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professionals to fill the positions of Meter Reader I & Meter Reader II in Water.

The Meter Reader I reports to the Water Meter Supervisor. The primary function of this position is to read meters visual and by radio signal on assigned routes and records information with electronic handheld or mobile devices. Performs installations, inspections and repairs on water meters, meter registers, electronic radio transmitters, meter boxes, lids, connections and, route maintenance. Additional essential duties include, but not limited to:

  • Communicate with customer about service inquires.
  • Meter transceiver unit maintenance and route maintenance.
  • AMI radio installation and change outs.
  • Residential and commercial ¾" to 2"meter replacements.
  • Investigate zero consumption and non-read exception.
  • Residential and commercial meter reading.
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Meter Reader II reports to the Water Meter Supervisor. The primary function of this position is to provide excellent customer service while investigating water customer inquiries such as excessive water consumption, crossed meters, water pressure irregularities, and leak checks. Completes daily work orders and communicates with customer, contractors, and internal sections. Trains new employees on meter section operations and equipment. Essential duties include all of Meter Reader I job duties as well as but not limited to:
  • Participates in shift rotations and overtime on a scheduled rotation.
  • Investigates customer concerns over water pressure, consumption inquires, meter leaks, meter box maintenance, and other issues involving the water meter and water system.
  • Completes work orders to open, close, lock off, and transfer water accounts.
  • New 3/4 inch up to 2 inch meter installs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as water leaks and main breaks.
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Technology associated with meter reading.
  • Knowledge of different meter types and their functionality.
  • Basic operation, maintenance, plumbing service of water meter infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of various equipment and hand tools associated with meter reading, installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of water distribution systems.
  • Traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operations.
  • Workplace safety, hazards, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment.
SKILLS:
  • Operating a phone, tablet, and personal computer and related software to demonstrate proficiency to complete work orders, documents, spreadsheets, emails, and timesheets.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Deductive reasoning and problem solving.
  • Ability to multi-task for handling heavy workloads.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and read, comprehend, and interpret written materials such as operational/technical manuals, Safety Data Sheets, system maps, and diagrams.
These positions are At-Will and are FLSA Non-Exempt - eligible for overtime compensation.

Please note, depending on experience and certification/s a candidate may be brought in as a Meter Reader II. The salary range listed in the posting is the minimum of the range for a Meter Reader I and the maximum of the range for a Meter Reader II, the pay range for each position is listed after each position's requirements below. This is a driving position and a motor vehicle report will be run as part of our pre-employment process.

Candidates for the Meter Reader I must possess the following requirements:


  • Must obtain Grade I Water Distribution ADEQ Certification within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be able to work overtime and a rotating schedule change.
  • 6 months of experience in plumbing and customer service.
  • Must acquire necessary knowledge to promote to Meter Reader 2 within 12 months of hire.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid AZ Driver's License.
Pay Range for a Meter Reader I: $18.21 - $25.50Hourly

Candidates for the Meter Reader II must possess the following requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • 1 year of experience in private or public sector directly related to water meter reading, installation, and repair; along with 1 year of direct customer service experience;
  • ADEQ Grade 1 Water Distribution Certification at time of hire or promotion;
  • Valid AZ Driver’s License;
  • Shift rotation and overtime is a requirement of this position
Pay Range of a Meter Reader II: $20.57 - $29.82 Hourly
