Job Description
Overview


As a MEP Technician I, the employee is responsible for providing technical assistance to TierPoint and its customers in the Data Center. The employee is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and service on the electrical - mechanical systems supporting the Data Center. The employee will educate and train other TierPoint personnel on tasks related to the mechanical-electrical systems and components. The employee will be primarily responsible for facility electrical / mechanical systems, documentation and ongoing service and support. This position is critical, as failure of these systems to function properly would result in millions of dollars in lost revenue and damaged equipment as well as significant legal liability for TierPoint.


Responsibilities


Responsibilities - Electrical


  • Determine priority of action based on severity of service disruptions and respond appropriately.
  • Identify and resolve customer access issues
  • Performing physical activities that require moving one’s whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, where the activities often also require considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of materials.
  • Operate, troubleshoot, repair and assist in performance of preventative maintenance of TierPoint’s electrical systems and components. These can include, but are not limited to: low and medium voltage switch gear, static transfer switches, power distribution units, remote power panels, branch circuits, large or medium voltage diesel generator systems, large UPS systems, building fire alarm / life safety, fire suppression systems and critical infrastructure monitoring systems.
  • Provide remote hands and eyes support for internal or external client issues
  • Installation of door access and camera surveillance systems
  • Responsible for the logging and tracking of problems in order to report, track and resolve complex issues.
  • Provide exceptional customer support, for moderately complex to complex problem diagnosis and scheduled processing in order to meet service level agreements.
  • Installation of new equipment and removal of systems as required
  • Monitor, identify, and escalate only the most complex problems according to documented TierPoint procedures.
  • Adhere to security procedures and controls
  • Assist in the physical installation of computer equipment and components, cable tray, conduit and telecommunications cabling.
  • The position is responsible for responding to 7/24-hour electrical and mechanical operational issues, which requires off-hour coverage via mobile phone.
  • Other responsibilities as required.
  • Provides coverage for other shift operations as required.
  • In coordination with the Tier 1 and / or other TierPoint personnel, provide technical assistance to various customers for second level problem/fault isolation.
  • Support and validate power infrastructure and deployment
  • Assist in installation and termination of network and communication wiring
  • Install and repair connectivity demarcation units for electrical and telecommunications circuitry.
  • Provides high quality, consistent, efficient and accurate work for internal and external customer service surrounding the Company values
  • Install and repair conduit systems and other current carrying equipment.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and best practices
  • Adopt and use defined systems, tools, procedures, processes, and standards
  • Coordinates all permitting, and inspections required by local authorities in the absence of Management.
  • Perform all daily operational tasks
  • Perform routine physical inspections for alarm identification and operational issues
  • Ensure all aspects of the physical infrastructure are kept clean and orderly
  • In emergency situations, dispatch technicians and or vendors, as needed, in the absence of Management.
  • Update documentation in a timely and accurate manner
  • Basic knowledge in all aspects of Data Center electrical operations.
  • Consistent high level of interaction and communication with peers, co-workers, other groups and outside vendors.
  • Assist in completing assigned projects
  • Understand and follow escalation procedures
  • Proactively manage ticket queue for timely request and response completion
  • Monitors ticket flows and receives escalations when Management is not available.
  • Conduct scheduled site surveys (inspection tours) of the Data Center

Responsibilities – HVAC/Plumbing

Qualifications


Qualifications / Requirements


  • Good working relationship with the local Electrical and Mechanical Inspector(s).
  • Proficiency in Service Now computer application
  • Must be able to lift objects over one’s head
  • Ability to work both independently and with others
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Associate degree in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering, Engineering / Mechanical Technology, Construction Management, a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to operate in a fast moving, team-oriented, collaborative environment with tight deadlines
  • Ability to use a ladder to work in elevated areas
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to differentiate between colors
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE, NEC and NFPA.
  • Adequate professional experience and knowledge to perform job responsibilities
  • Proficiency in using MS Office Suite and Windows-based computer applications
  • Ability to use small hand tools
  • Must possess a current Journeyman or Master Electrician’s license or Universal CFC Refrigeration License in good standing with the local authorities.


Minimum Qualifications - Electrical


  • Basic knowledge in the operation of 100% uptime data centers, critical facilities environment or industrial power systems
  • Raised floor or overhead bus power distribution
  • Multi-task and maintain composure in stressful and demanding work environment; Exercise flexibility in challenging and/or perplexing situations
  • Basic experience with detailed record keeping and data entry accuracy
  • Low and medium voltage switchgear
  • Ability to effectively differentiate between colors without assistance
  • Excellent oral and written communication and customer service skills
  • Multi-module or single module UPS systems
  • Ability to read and analyze blueprints and construction drawings including single line diagrams
  • Must be knowledgeable in commercial construction field
  • Basic knowledge of automated building control systems
  • Ability to effectively utilize and handle small parts without assistance
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of standards, practices and procedures of installing, testing and operating electrical and mechanical equipment. Usually works with limited supervision.
  • Ability to effectively utilize and handle hand operated and power tools
  • Basic experience with most of the following:
  • Low and medium voltage diesel generators
  • Provide for a safe, neat and evolving working environment

Minimum Qualifications – Mechanical/Plumbing

  • Basic knowledge and experience with 1,000+ ton chiller plants and related components desired
  • Must be knowledgeable in commercial construction field
  • HVAC and related components
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of standards, practices and procedures of installing, testing and operating electrical and mechanical equipment. Usually works with limited supervision.
  • Basic experience with most of the following:
  • Basic knowledge and experience with CRAC/CRAH units
  • Ability to effectively utilize and handle small parts without assistance
  • Ability to read and analyze blueprints and construction drawings including single line diagrams
  • Basic knowledge and experience with rooftop units
  • Basic experience with detailed record keeping and data entry accuracy
  • Ability to effectively differentiate between colors without assistance

Preferred Experience


  • Minimum of two (2) years of technical training or equivalent progressively responsible related experience in a web hosting or other mission critical building engineering operations. Or (1) year as a Journeyman Electrician or HVAC Technician with satisfactory or better performance plus (1) year industry experience.


Technical training may be trade school or manufacturers training on UPS systems, medium voltage switch gear, low voltage power distribution units, building automation systems, 1.0 megawatt and larger engine-generator sets and/or large diesel engines, and other training directly related to the operation and maintenance of electrical / mechanical plant in a high reliability environment.
