Job Title: Mental Health Technician (MHT)

Job Code: T6001/Support Service Worker

Shift: PRN/19 Hours Per Week

Job Hours: 3rd Shift

Base Location: Decatur, GA.

Division/Department/Program: Child & Adolescent Crisis Stabilization Unit

The Adolescent Crisis Stabilization Program is a short-term, 24/7 residential crisis unit located in Decatur, Georgia. The Crisis Stabilization program provides comprehensive psychiatric crisis intervention and stabilization services to adolescents, 14-17 years of age.


Under general supervision, provides basic patient care and works with patients/clients to develop daily living skills. May take vital signs.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists with Activities of Daily Living (toileting, feeding, hygiene, etc.), to meet the needs of the client.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Conducts skills groups, recreational activity groups and community meetings with clients.
  • Monitors general client activity to observe and report behavior/progress of clients admitted to a community residential crisis stabilization center for treatment of acute mental illness or behavioral health disorders.
  • Assists in serving meals, with laundry.
  • Observes and becomes familiar with each client’s behavior and disability.
  • Monitors clients for detection of any behavior which could be injurious to self or others, or which is so unusual or atypical that immediate attention of nursing staff is warranted.
  • Provide transportation of clients when needed.
  • Provides personal care and basic nursing procedures to clients, including feeding, personal hygiene and grooming as necessary.
  • Obtains vital signs. Records clearly, concisely and accurately all client care data and other documentation in medical records according to agency protocols.
  • Reports changes in client condition to supervisor and Registered Nurse
  • Follows established procedures for clients on special precautions, such as suicidal watch, close observation, escape precautions, seclusion and/or restraints.
  • Interacts with clients positively and respectfully.
  • Maintains clean and organized condition to assure a safe, secure, and attractive environment for clients and staff.
  • Assists with completion of daily census records.
  • Accurately collects data (paper and/or electronically) on target and replacement behaviors specific to the client’s Behavior Support Plan.
  • Provides important information regarding the client to facilitate appropriate case management and collaboration.
  • Provides instruction and support to each client in maintaining his/her personal living space in a clean and orderly manner.
  • When necessary for the physical safety of the client, uses the least restrictive, agency-approved behavioral or physical intervention technique appropriate for the situation.
  • Attends client specific meetings and trainings, including trainings on clients’ Behavior Support Plans
  • Secures assistance from and/or helps other staff in handling acute behavioral crisis situations.
  • Maintains awareness of clients’ behavior and physical whereabouts to ensure their safety.
  • Uses all appropriate infection control and other safety measures.
  • Provides basic patient care and works with patients/clients to develop daily living skills. May take vital signs.
  • Assembles new chart packets.
  • Helps with admission intake process.

Individual :

  • Attend mandatory monthly meetings.
  • Monitor and assist during unit visitation.
  • Complete admissions process for new arrivals.
  • Assist with the facilitation of DBT skills groups for the appropriate number of times per week.
  • Monitor group for appropriate client behaviors.
  • Organize the unit.
  • Complete the daily 24-hour report to document the client’s behaviors during the shift.
  • Conduct safety checks for new admissions as well as current clients if necessary.
  • Complete daily client observations sheets for assigned client/s.
  • Assist with “Receive and Evaluate” clients.
  • Transport clients if needed.
  • Monitor and assist clients during the hygiene routine.
  • Conduct room sweeps for contraband or dangerous items.
  • Assist with manual holds/restraints.
  • Sit with 1:1 client all day and ensure that they are never more than an arms-length away or without supervision.
  • Prepare clients’ belongings upon discharge.
  • Attend Required Trainings for professional development.
  • All applicants must be capable of implementing all of the physical behavior management/ manual techniques (CPI or MANDT) for employment.
  • Monitor clients during Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Assist clients with scheduled phone calls. Document those phone calls.
  • Facilitate Activity groups for the appropriate number of times per week.
  • Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED AND Six months of experience in a related field


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience of at least one year working with Dual Diagnosed (Substance Abuse/Mental Health) and or residential setting
  • Experience in trauma-informed care, or trauma related interventions and skills
  • Experience serving individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder preferred
  • Direct Care Experience
  • Experience with individuals being served in a psychiatric hospital, residential, or group home setting preferred.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of DBT is preferred.
  • Interventions, Diagnosing, Treatment Plans
  • Is comfortable and proficient with collaborative & concurrent documentation.
  • At least six months of experience in a related field
  • Experience with Care Logic or other EMR

Requirements/Competencies:

  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and subject to random drug screens.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds.
  • Any combination of training and experience, which would have enabled the applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities Note: Some positions may require a valid driver's license.
  • Requires long periods of sitting/standing.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This position is on-site and does not accommodate a remote schedule or working from home.
  • Must have valid Georgia driver’s license and Motor Vehicle Record in accordance with company policy.
  • Candidates for selection must pass a criminal background check (including fingerprinting).
