Job Description

Job Summary

The Medical Writer supports healthcare clients’ goals by providing a variety of products and services designed to complement overall product strategies and brand positioning. The Medical Writer ensures that all educational/informational components are truly science-based, product-specific and linguistically accurate, as well as within the context of each client’s needs, the marketplace and competitive challenges. The Medical Writer usually works closely with the client in order to communicate clearly and appropriately tailor content to its target audience, including healthcare professionals, healthcare consumers, patients, potential investors and partners.

  • Ensures that all written communications for the Healthcare Department adhere to a consistently high standard of quality and clarity
  • Collaborates with the Creative team and Account Services as needed in developing or reviewing concepts, layouts, presentations and other materials
  • Provides direction and coordination with freelance writers and other vendors
  • Reviews and signs off on any healthcare-related job before it is routed to Production Director

  • Researches, writes, edits, proofreads and supervises both staff and freelance writers in the execution of materials such as:

  • Assists the Marketing Director and Account Services staff in seeking new business opportunities by providing input for marketing strategies, developing portions of presentations and participating in new business meetings
  • Journal Advertising

  • Maintains close working relationships with clients, physicians, researchers and other professionals in the development of each project; maintains agency contact with clients as needed and keeps Account Executive informed

Qualifications:

  • Education: B.A. in English, Journalism or B.S. in healthcare-related field; advanced degree a plus
  • May work odd hours

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Must be familiar with, and adhere to, generally accepted writing and publication standards, as well as individual journal requirements
  • Must have thorough understanding of objective, evidence-based medical writing
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Expert writing, editing and proofreading skills, including solid spelling and grammar
  • Excels in oral and written communications with a variety of audiences, providing extensive information and support to perfection-oriented healthcare clients, physicians and c-level corporate leaders, with comfort and authority
  • Detail orientation, with ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously; excellent time-management skills
  • Must be a prolific writer, with previous experience in writing and producing most, if not all, of the aforementioned materials
  • Strong relationship-building skills with clients and other team members
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with conducting literature searches, developing manuscripts, publication research and planning, reference- and fact-checking
  • Should have a good command of Microsoft Office products
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Must be familiar with regulatory and other legal issues impacting healthcare clients, particularly those in the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industries
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in dealing with clients and vendors
  • Demonstrates an ability to lead a team and collaborate with other departments
  • Must be able to apply analytical skills to medical facts and clinical data, interpret and report information in support of client’s goals and objectives
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail and follow-through to resolve any outstanding issues
  • Extensive knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminology
