Through home visits, the Massage Therapist provides Massage Therapy to patients under the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Waiver. The Massage Therapist is responsible for identifying, assessing, planning and implementing appropriate massage care plan for waiver patients to improve muscle tone, circulation, range of motion and address physical symptoms related to their illness. The Massage Therapist will also provide physical and emotional comfort, pain management and restore the idea of healthy touch for children/youth who are dealing with treatments that may involve painful interventions. Functions as additional resource for other members of the palliative care team as needed via consultation and educational offerings. Supports agency’s mission to provide the highest quality care by complying with regulatory guidelines, meeting agency standards, and obtaining appropriate certification.

JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Acts as the patient’s advocate in relation to Massage Therapy.
  • Ensures each patient is assessed and that treatment given is evaluated using evidence-based practice, including improvement of muscle tone, circulation, range of motion, and physical symptoms related to their illness.
  • Monitors and reviews the effectiveness of the therapy given and modifies it as necessary to support patient’s treatment plan of care
  • Participates in interdisciplinary case conferences and acts as a clinical resource for the team when needed.
  • Maintains a caseload and ensures accurate and timely individualized assessment, planning, implementation and documentation.
  • Uses evidence-based treatments/modalities to address patient’s needs and preferences.
  • Develops a plan of care in conjunction with patient and family.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of illness and the potential complications and side effects of treatments
  • Communicates promptly with the Home Care Palliative Care Program Manager or designee as well as the multidisciplinary team as issues arise for patients, whilst being mindful of confidentiality issues
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Acts professionally and is legally accountable for all aspects of work
  • Discusses patient suitability to receive massage therapy treatment with the referring professional and the Home Care Palliative Care Program Manager, as needed.

NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists with community relations and community educational opportunities.


Formal education required:

High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred

Currently licensed as a Massage Therapist by the State of New York

Previous experience required:

1. Minimum 3 years of working with the medically fragile population.

  • At least 1 year of clinical experience with pediatric population, preferably involving end of life care.
