Job Description
Position Summary
The Massage Therapist will be responsible for providing massages based off certification type, to purchasing clients of the Recreational Sports Program.
Major Responsibilities
  • Communicate with Assistant Director of Recreational Sports for Facilities and Aquatics concerning equipment requests.
  • Complete employee trainings.
  • Maintain client session records with confidentiality
  • Follow massage redemption procedures using the Fusion Facility Management system.
  • Discuss client concerns, medical histories and specific needs to develop personalized treatment plans for clients related to massage type, treatment area and treatment frequency.
  • Develop schedules with clients through communication via various communication methods.
Job Requirements
  • Communication skills. Massage therapists must listen carefully and convey information clearly in order to ensure that clients achieve desired results through massage sessions.
  • Time-management skills. Massage therapists must be effective in using the time allocated for appointments to help each client accomplish his or her goals.
  • Decision-making skills. Massage therapists must evaluate each client’s needs and recommend the best treatment based on that person’s needs.
  • Physical strength and dexterity. Massage therapists must be strong and able to exert pressure through a variety of movements when manipulating a client’s muscles.
  • Interpersonal skills. Massage therapists must give clients a positive experience. Building trust and making clients feel comfortable are necessary for therapists to expand their client base.
  • Empathy. Massage therapists often treat clients who are in pain. They must be compassionate and sympathetic to their clients’ problems and needs.
  • Compliance: Massage therapists must adhere to all current regulations and laws related to massage therapy.
  • Physical stamina. Massage therapists may give several treatments during a workday and must be able to stand throughout massage appointments.
  • Customer service skills: SUNY Cortland Students, Faculty and Staff and current members of the Student Life Center can schedule “on the table” Sports or Relaxation Massages, shorter Chair Massages and Cupping combined with Massage sessions with the massage therapist.
  • Integrity. Massage therapists often have access to clients’ medical histories and other privacy information. Therefore, they must be trustworthy and protect client confidentiality.
Required Qualifications
  • Current New York State licensure as a massage therapist.
  • Availability to work outside of standard office hours as needed to provide sessions that meet client scheduling needs.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience and certifications to provide various massage therapy modalities (e.g., chair massage, sport massage, relaxation massage (Swedish or deep tissue), cupping, etc.).
