Job Description

Duties

The Medical Instrument Technician (Diagnostic Ultrasound) is assigned to the Ultrasound Section of the Radiology Service and will perform Ultrasonography studies, process the studies using Picture Archive Communications System (PACS) for interpretation by the radiologist. This position is required to perform Ultrasound scanning of the abdomen, pelvis (including endo-vaginal exams), breast, neck, scrotum, and extremities (non-vascular). The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Constructs optimum image presentation on the monitor, through skilled scanning techniques and record data.
  • Uses sterile technique when performing portable ultrasound examinations in the Intensive Care Unit and on the Wards.
  • Cleans the equipment thoroughly and develops a precise and consistent method in covering the equipment, and transducer with sterile drapes, being careful not to contaminate the sterile field.
  • Identifies when additional scans or different positions of the body are needed to fully demonstrate the anatomic area being evaluated.
  • Processes and post processes the image and to set up the equipment for operation to provide manual override procedures.
  • Performs computerized ultrasonic tomographic scans of major and minor organ systems.
  • Performs general abdominal and portal vein ultrasound examinations.
  • Advises radiologists or referring physicians of results of examinations and provide them with a preliminary diagnostic evaluation.
  • Oversees patient scheduling and gives the proper pre-examination instructions when necessary.
  • Maintains a quality assurance review of all ultrasound scanning equipment.
  • Schedules and appropriately manage inpatients, outpatients, and Emergency department patients.
  • Reviews and organizes the patient's previous radiographic and ultrasound studies for comparison with the current study so that an effective diagnostic use can be made of the current study.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
  • Education. There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation. Preferred Experience/Qualifications: Possession of Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. [Please submit a copy of the certification with your application package.]
  • Licensure. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For certain functional areas at the higher levels or supervisory assignments, specific certifications appropriate to the specialty are indicated in this standard under "Titles and Certification/Registrations". For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

Grade Determination:
GS-09 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-08), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. KSAs 1, 2, and 3 are appropriate for all positions at this level.
  • Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
  • Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
Diagnostic Ultrasound Technicians operate diagnostic ultrasonic scanning equipment to produce cross sectional and two-dimensional pictures of internal organs and body structures used to diagnose diseases and other medical conditions. Registration is offered by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); straight pulling (2 hours); reaching above shoulder; walking (2 hours); standing (2 hours); repeated bending (2 hours); near vision corrected to 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in on eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; and hearing (aid permitted).
