About The Role


We are seeking a public relations professional with national media relations expertise and strong strategic thinking skills. The Senior Media Relations Strategist is responsible for serving as a subject matter expert and integral advisor internally and externally.

Responsibilities 


Specifically, this position will be responsible for:


  • Reviewing press releases, media lists, pitches created by the team.
  • Advising C-suite executives on overall PR strategy.
  • Successfully securing earned media coverage from national, trade and other priority media outlets.
  • Participating in teaching and training internally and with clients.
  • Developing compelling stories and pitch angles.
  • Participating in crisis communications response.
  • Building and maintaining a rolodex of key media contacts on behalf of our clients.
  • Building strategic earned media campaigns in collaboration with client teams.


EDUCATION


  • Bachelor’s degree required.


Requirements


The ideal candidate has 8+ years of media relations experience, preferably with 2+ years in an agency environment. We will strongly consider journalists with applicable skills. Required experience includes, but is not limited to:


  • Higher education sector experience preferred
  • Existing media relationships
  • Demonstrated success in securing significant media coverage
  • Experience with effectively managing a wide variety of crises
  • Platform knowledge of Meltwater, Muckrack, Cision, PR Newswire and other standard tools
  • Executive presence and experience
  • Project management skills including time management prioritization
  • Leadership skills with managing teams and clients via influence
  • Decision-making skills including ability to ability to apply critical thinking to a simple or complex situation, analyze situations including short- and long-term impact, understand the available options, and recommend the best course of action among the options
  • Effective communication, writing and editing skills and knowledge of AP Style
  • Thorough understanding of local and national media (print, digital and social), influencers, advocates, and their needs with emphasis on higher education, healthcare and B2B services
  • Experience with and understanding of PR and marketing concepts and practices
  • Candidate must thrive in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating calm under pressure
  • Working knowledge of social media
  • Experience with media monitoring and reporting
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong proofreading skills and ability to multitask and execute through to completion
  • Understanding of long-term communications strategy and messaging needs as well as the right channels/events to utilize to deploy materials
