Pitkin County is looking for a skilled Fleet Technician to diagnose, maintain and repair machinery and vehicles. You will be responsible for safely ensuring functionality and reliability of vehicles, heavy equipment, engines, and mechanical systems. Our fleet of 350+ assets contains light duty and heavy duty cars/trucks, construction, airport, fire, and landfill equipment. - 4 day work week (10 hours per day)

Mechanic I:
- Performs Department of Transportation inspections on heavy equipment and emergency equipment to include fire trucks, snowplows, and ambulances.
- Performs preventative maintenance and repair on assigned vehicles and equipment; tags out of service issues and informs the Fleet Supervisor.
- Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Completes steel welding and fabrication and aluminum welding.
- Maintains repair notes, and data entry into Fleet Management system.
- Works on a variety of tasks as required and assigned by Supervisor.
- Participates in snow removal and yard clean-up of shop grounds.
Mechanic III (in additional to Level I):
- Acts as Fleet Supervisor in absence of the Fleet Supervisor when assigned.
- Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs heavy and light equipment and vehicles.
This position follows a sequence:
- Level I:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Up to one year of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles.
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Colorado Driver’s License (or be able to obtain within the first 6 months).
ASE certifications preferred.
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
- Level III (in addition to Level I):
3 plus years of experience maintaining and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles.
Must possess an ASE Master Light and Heavy Truck Mechanic certification and ASE Master Automotive Technician certification, or the ability to obtain certification within three years of appointment.
Knowledge Of:
- State and federal laws and regulations governing work performed.
- County policies and procedures.
- Record keeping and records management rules and standards.
Skill In:
- Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
- Utilizing standard personal computer software programs and specialized state and County software.
- Handling multiple tasks simultaneously, under pressure, and in emergency and stressful situations.
- Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Physical Demands and Working Environment
- Work is performed in a mechanical shop with some exposure to inclement weather, potentially dangerous machinery and tools, airborne particles, and fumes.
