Job Description

If so, we might have just the opportunity you're looking for Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Materials Properties group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Materials Engineer Our team works an on-site 9x80 schedule located at our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off. Responsibilities Include: Develop R&D programs as well as support existing programs in the areas of fusion welding (arc, laser, etc.), including dissimilar metal joints, and 3D metal printing (powder bed, directed energy deposition, etc.). The end applications are typically focused on component in harsh environments (e.g., extremes of temperature, pressure, high strain rate applications, etc.) as found in power generation (e.g., nuclear, fossil fuel, solar, etc.) and protection applications such as ballistic armor and blast protection associated with National Homeland Security. Writing proposals and obtaining funding from appropriate private and public organizations to implement work in the areas of interest discussed above. Guide others in performing a variety of unique laboratory research studies to prove new principles and concepts related to advanced materials development. Take a leadership role in developing new programs associated with advanced materials development and assessment in support of grand ideas at the departmental, directorate and lab levels. Assist the leadership team in implementing the strategic plan of the organization. Lead as well as support programs, including proposal efforts to secure funding for scientific/engineering work and other business development opportunities. Build, lead, and support effective teams to implement scientific and engineering work. Participate in program development activities, both in lead and supporting roles Develop and enhance manufacturing techniques for the development of alloys. Lead materials testing programs, including setting test matrices, solving issues, and analyzing data. Develop new characterization and materials development/manufacturing facilities and capabilities. Conduct and document work at an appropriate quality level, including collection and interpretation of laboratory data, planning of research tasks, as well as assessing and applying a wide range of research techniques to those tasks. Identify and build synergetic intra- and inter-directorate (within-INL) as well as external collaborations especially with the goal of developing and initiation new materials-based projects and programs. Identify and coordinate synergetic collaborations between modeling and experimental activities essential to peers and partners internal and external to INL. Direct and contribute to the completion of landmarks on multiple projects and programmatic objectives. Taking a lead in establishing beneficial collaborative relationship with customers, technical representatives and field operations personnel seeking application based advance materials development and deployment. Serving as a technical resource to others, including mentorship and provision of guidance to junior level scientists Serving as a major or sole contributor to the generation of reports, publications, and proposals and contribution to the generation of additional proposals and concepts submitted for external funding. Representing the MS&E Department and INL with sponsors and peers through programmatic and technical presentations. Engage in external technical leadership associated with relevant technical conferences or national/international in areas related to main mission as described above. Participate in and lead technical work and perform research and development in area of expertise Leading proposals to secure new funding, assist in business strategy development and in relationship development with key sponsors, identification of opportunities for new business, proposal development and preparation, marketing, program execution Maintain currency in the relevant scientific literature and community Qualifications Minimum Requirements: PhD in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or related field and at least 4-6 years of related post-PhD experience. This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" / "Q" clearance, which requires US Citizenship. Established reputation and relationships with other national and international researchers in materials related working, including development and characterization. Experience identifying synergetic collaborations between experimental and modeling activities within, and external, to organizations where researcher has previously (or currently) worked. Experience meeting the technical goals of partner internal and external to organizations where the researcher has previously or currently worked. Demonstrated experience building and leading effective teams and enhancing the technical and professional skills of junior and experienced staff through active mentoring and training. Established track record for serving as the lead in technical decision-making and direction at the medium to large-scale project level. Strong background and an established record of high-quality research in structural materials. Experience conceiving and developing multi-disciplinary research projects on structure/property relationships of materials. Demonstrated record of effective teamwork. Demonstrated ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries. Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Record of commitment to safe, secure and environmentally sound operations. Experience leading multi-disciplinary technical projects and technical teams to success. Familiarity with National Laboratory programs. Experience in structure/property characterization of materials, including development of new materials, neutron irradiation effects, physical metallurgy, and materials characterization techniques. Preferred Requirements: Strong research background in functional materials. A strong record of achievement through reports, publications, intellectual property, or technical products 10 years of related post-PhD experience.
