Job Summary:

The Materials Engineer designs, develops and modifies processes and methods for the manufacture, molding, and utilization of materials in the production of hardware, electronic components and/or structures. In addition, the Engineer analyzes materials and material components to establish operating data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results.

Essential Duties:

  • Other duties may be assigned
  • Collaborating with Supplier Quality team in their communication with material suppliers related to the development and validation of detailed material specifications for new materials and the resolution of quality issues
  • Using manufacturing data such as defect rate and alert rate to evaluate supplied materials. Drawing conclusions that lead to improved manufacturability and cell performance
  • Develop methods and trains select engineers on the operation and fundamentals of SEM, FIB/SEM, EDS, and WDS
  • Developing imaging and analysis methods using FIB, SEM, EDS, or WDS to evaluate performance and failure origins
  • Utilizing knowledge of Panasonic’s manufacturing process to support improvements of supplied components
  • Work with process engineering and supplier quality teams to develop standard operating procedures for routine analysis that will be conducted by those respective groups

Qualifications: Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

  • Preferred: Master’s Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline
  • Basic/Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline

Essential Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of engineering experience in areas such as manufacturing, product development, design, or other area.
  • Strong analytic and decision-making abilities. Able to influence others to move towards a common goal.
  • Intuitive, adaptable, creative, and collaborative with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Able to manage multiple concurrent tasks in a fast-paced environment, effectively prioritize work, and deliver quality results.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with analytical chemistry techniques such as GC, ICP, and UV-Vis
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment, as well as with cross-functional groups
  • Ability to use statistical analysis to derive conclusions and provide direction in investigations, new parts integration, defect reduction, and productivity improvements
  • Fundamental understanding of electron microscopy operation
  • A background in high-volume manufacturing is strongly desired
  • Experience using Design of Experiments concepts to develop better assembly conditions and part applications
  • Knowledge of commonly used materials in battery manufacturing, particularly parts associated with cell assembly
