Job Description
:
Primary Responsibilities
  • Mid-level ability to understand and interpret blue print metallurgical specifications.
  • Ability to use standard Materials Lab equipment (hardness testers, microscope, stereoscope, sample preparation equipment, etchants, etc…).
  • Ability to explain and present materials analysis to various levels within the company.
  • Ability to complete Material Lab Requests with minimal guidance from senior personnel.
  • Researches and recommends equipment upgrades or purchases as appropriate.
  • Provide some direction of efforts and training for interns/technicians.
  • Provide occasional temporary support for projects.
  • Mid level of technical skill for failure analysis.
  • Prepare and/or oversee Lab report creation and completion.
  • Willingness and ability to mix and use chemical etchants, including strong acids.
  • Mid-level knowledge of testing required to achieve desired data/results and guide requesters to choose appropriate tests.
  • Guide internal customers through materials testing available to choose correct testing to achieve desired data.
  • Occasional travel to suppliers, potential suppliers and Production facilities.
  • Follows priorities set by senior personnel. Shifts priorities as required.
  • Ability to choose and use correct outsource Lab functions as necessary.
  • Assists senior personnel to maintain Lab consumables at necessary levels.
  • Interact with suppliers for process and materials issues as appropriate.
  • Ability to locate and use appropriate standards (ASTM, ISO, etc…)
  • Ability to recommend solutions/suggestions to address materials or process issues as appropriate.
  • Other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Additional Desired Skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office. Lotus Notes experience helpful.
  • Experience with advanced analysis techniques such as SEM and EDS.
  • Familiarity with a variety of materials, primarily steel. Basic knowledge of aluminum, polymers, brass, bronze, magnesium and titanium knowledge helpful.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum of three years practical experience with Materials Laboratory practice and failure analysis. Process Engineering/Development background considered a plus.
  • Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy, Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Science at minimum.
